Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir / Madam,
I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the rumored closure of our local sport and leisure center. As a resident who relies heavily on this facuility, I belive its closure would have a devasating impact on our neighborhood.
My family and friends use the centre on a regular basis. My children attend swimming lessons there every weekend, while my friends and I utilize the badminton courts and fitness suite at least twice a week. It serves as our primary venue for staying active and socializing.
The centre is a vital hub fir the entire community. it provides affordable health and fitness options for people of all ages, from toddlers learning to swim to seniors participating in specialized excercise classes. Furthermore, it serves as a safe and positive environment for local youth to gather and engage in sports.
If this faculty were to close, the local effects would be srvere. Physical health level would likely decline due to a lack of accessible excercise space.
I strongly urge the council to reconsider any plans to close the centre and to explore alternative funding solutions to keep it open.
Yours faithfully,
Krina Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You clearly explained how your family uses the centre, why it is important to the community, and the potential negative consequences of its closure. Your tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a local council, and your position is consistent throughout the response. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the prompt. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific detail regarding the 'alternative funding solutions' mentioned in your conclusion to further demonstrate your ability to extend ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which aids readability. You use cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'If this faculty were to close' to link your ideas effectively. However, there are minor issues with paragraphing and punctuation, such as the lowercase 'it' at the start of the third paragraph. Improving the variety of linking words would help the flow feel more natural and sophisticated.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for the task, using terms like 'vital hub', 'specialized', and 'reconsider'. However, there are several spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'facuility', 'belive', 'devasating', 'fir', 'excercise', 'faculty' (used incorrectly for facility), and 'srvere'. These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable. While the meaning remains clear, these spelling inaccuracies prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for common spelling mistakes will significantly improve your score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional sentence 'If this faculty were to close, the local effects would be srvere.' This shows a good attempt at complex grammar. However, there are several grammatical slips, including missing articles and subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'Physical health level would likely decline' (should be 'levels'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Increasing your focus on proofreading for small grammatical slips will help you achieve a higher band.
