Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Sir

I hope you are doing well in your life. I'm Khushi, a resident of the society I would like to draw your attention towards the problem which causes due to the shutting down of community centre.

The local community centre has played a crucial role in our neighbourhood so for that I want to inform you that this community centre is used by many of my friends, family, relatives and neighbours. They all can come and play, and spend their time towards fitness. As we all are aware that the sports and leisure centre is important for the local community of our society as these are the basic necessity of the area.

Regarding this, I would like to request you to not to shut down the community centre as this will going to impact our society. Because there is no other space nearby where people can play. Kindly look into this issue.

Thankyou

Khushi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt, which is a positive start. However, the development of your ideas is quite limited. For example, when describing how you use the centre, you only mention that friends and family 'come and play,' without specifying any particular activities or frequency. Similarly, the explanation of the effects of closure is brief and lacks detail. To achieve a higher band, you should expand on your points with specific examples or personal anecdotes to demonstrate the impact more clearly. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though it could be more professional.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite basic and sometimes repetitive. Phrases like 'Regarding this' and 'Because there is no other space' feel a bit mechanical. The progression of ideas is logical, but the transitions between sentences could be smoother. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect your ideas more naturally, ensuring that each sentence flows logically into the next.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task but remains quite simple. You rely on common words like 'problem,' 'important,' and 'play.' While these words are used correctly, they do not demonstrate the range required for a higher band. There are also some minor issues with word choice, such as 'problem which causes due to,' which is grammatically awkward. To improve, try to incorporate more precise vocabulary related to community facilities and social impact, and focus on using collocations more accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. For instance, 'this will going to impact' is incorrect; it should be 'this will impact.' Additionally, 'not to shut down' is slightly awkward in this context. There are also punctuation and phrasing issues, such as 'so for that I want to inform you.' While your meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors prevent the text from reaching a higher band. Focus on subject-verb agreement and correct verb tense usage.
