Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Sam Mistry and I am writing this regarding the possible effects on the people if our local council closes.

I live near by local community area and we are using community area in our daily life. My friends and I use sports center to play a badminton. Furthermore, my parents are also using the leisure center for their yoga classes. Hence, this suggests that how much this community center is important to us. Because without it, we would not be able to play and others like me who are using other facilities would not able to use.

Recently, I heard a rumor about closing the center. I would like you to know that this community center plays an important role in our daily lives. If this center will close then we would have to go to another city's community center which not only far but also costly as well.

Therefore, I am making a request not to close the center.

Yours faithfully,

Sam Mistry

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: how the center is used, why it is important, and the consequences of closure. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why the center is important is brief and relies on simple statements like 'this suggests that how much this community center is important to us.' To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific details about the benefits, such as the social or health-related advantages for the community, rather than just stating that it is used.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore,' 'Hence,' and 'Therefore' to link your points. However, the use of these devices is sometimes slightly mechanical or misused, such as 'Hence, this suggests that how much this community center is important to us,' which is grammatically awkward and disrupts the flow. Improving the variety and naturalness of your linking words would enhance the overall coherence of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but remains quite basic. You use repetitive phrases like 'community center' and 'local community area.' There are also some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'I live near by local community area' (should be 'near the local community center'). To improve, try to incorporate more precise synonyms and collocations related to public facilities and urban planning to demonstrate a wider range of vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity, such as 'we are using community area in our daily life' (should be 'we use the community center') and 'others like me who are using other facilities would not able to use' (missing the verb 'be'). Additionally, there are issues with articles and prepositions throughout the text. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles would significantly improve your accuracy.
