Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to you provide some details regarding my friends or family use the centre. We just want to use the centre to play some games, physically activities and some leisure activities. These activities not only for the entertainment but also to obtain healthy life styles. Moreover, I think sports and leisure centre is very important for the local community to play some games with their friends and family members. If they use the city community centre, they did not need to go anywhere else for playing.

Furthermore, if the local community centre will be be closed, local people will be effected as they have to go another city for leisure activities. Also, they can miss the opportunities to play in local centre, which will can be effected to their health. As physical activities play a crucial role to become physically fit and healthier.

Yours faithfully,

Nasreen

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points in the prompt: usage, importance, and the effects of closure. However, the development of these ideas is quite limited. For instance, the explanation of how you use the centre is vague, simply stating 'play some games' and 'physically activities'. The impact of closure is also described in general terms without specific examples of how it would affect the community. To achieve a higher band, you should provide more concrete details, such as specific sports played or the social benefits for different age groups, to fully develop your arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organised into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the flow of ideas is somewhat mechanical. While you use transition words like 'Moreover' and 'Furthermore', the internal logic within sentences is occasionally strained, such as the sentence 'If they use the city community centre, they did not need to go anywhere else for playing.' The referencing is sometimes unclear, and the progression of ideas feels repetitive rather than building towards a strong conclusion. Improving the variety of cohesive devices and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on basic terms like 'play some games' and 'physically activities'. There are also some errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'obtain healthy life styles' (instead of 'maintain a healthy lifestyle') and 'will can be effected' (confusing 'effect' and 'affect'). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and a wider range of vocabulary related to community services and health benefits.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

There is a mix of simple and some attempted complex sentence structures, but accuracy is inconsistent. You frequently struggle with verb forms and modal verbs, such as 'they did not need to go' (should be 'would not need') and 'will can be effected' (a double modal error). Additionally, there are issues with subject-verb agreement and word forms, such as 'physically activities' instead of 'physical activities'. While the meaning is generally clear, these frequent errors in basic grammar structures prevent the writing from reaching a higher band.
