Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to request you of rethink once again about your decision of closing recreation centre permanently by calculating its effect on the local people.

This centre is like a heaven for me and friends. As everyone of us have busy schedule once we got some free time we go to this centre and enjoy a lot.

Such kind of centres are always helpful for all age categories. The children use it for their fun as it has swimming pool while for adults it act as stress reliver. The old age people sit together and talk with each other.

If in case it is closed then local children will not have any place where they can play and enjoy. The adults like me who are sitting at the work for the entire day, they will not have any physical activities which will lead to their health issues.

I hope you will understand our situation and cancel the order of closure.

Yours sincerely,

Alan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: how the centre is used, its importance to the community, and the potential effects of its closure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a council. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the description of how you and your friends use the centre is quite brief, and the explanation of the effects of closure could be more detailed to fully explore the impact on the community. While the task requirements are met, the depth of the arguments is basic, which prevents a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organised into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. There is a logical flow from the introduction to the specific points requested. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. Transitions between sentences are often missing or repetitive (e.g., 'If in case it is closed'). The referencing is generally clear, but the overall structure lacks the sophisticated linking required for higher bands. Improving the variety of linking words and phrases would significantly enhance the flow of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision expected at higher levels. There are several instances of awkward phrasing or incorrect collocations, such as 'request you of rethink' (should be 'request that you rethink') and 'act as stress reliver' (should be 'acts as a stress reliever'). The word choice is generally simple and repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'enjoy' and 'centre'. To improve, you should focus on using more precise terminology related to community services and health benefits.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('everyone of us have', 'it act as'), missing articles ('the old age people'), and awkward sentence construction ('the adults like me who are sitting at the work'). While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors indicates a lack of control over more complex grammatical forms. Focusing on basic subject-verb agreement and article usage will help improve your accuracy.
