Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to show my disagreement on centre closure. I explain you why that center important to all society members and impact on people if it close.

First of all, This centre has huge opportunities for young generation. It provides job opportunities to fresher students, source of daily basic needs of local people, fun activities for children.

People also count this centre as a daily part of life because it fulfills their needs. This sports centre has all latest equipment and facilities, so all children get benefit of it at their doorstep and stay active and passionate towards their learning activities also Parents do not take worries of their children. Our senior citizens also use this centre for refreshments activities such as This centre has Yoga studio.

If this centre close, it impact very bad on people. Children cannot take benefit of sport club and grow up their skills along this they have to go far for sports activities. Senior citizens cannot go out for refreshments. It is drastically change people’s routine. I request you to do not close this centre as it very important for local people.

Regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly state your disagreement with the closure, explain the importance of the centre for the community, and describe the negative effects of its potential closure. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the mention of 'job opportunities to fresher students' is a bit vague and could have been expanded with more specific examples. While the purpose of the letter is clear, the tone is occasionally informal and lacks the professional polish expected in a formal letter to a local council. To improve, ensure that your arguments are more fully extended with concrete examples rather than general statements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some basic cohesive devices such as 'First of all' and 'If this centre close'. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the use of linking words is repetitive. There are instances where the progression of ideas feels slightly disjointed, particularly in the second paragraph where the transition between job opportunities and children's activities is abrupt. Improving the variety of cohesive devices and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would help elevate your score in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'latest equipment', 'facilities', and 'refreshments activities'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choices and collocations, such as 'take worries of their children' (instead of 'worry about their children') and 'grow up their skills' (instead of 'develop their skills'). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and relies on basic phrasing. To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and a wider variety of descriptive language to express your points more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, particularly regarding subject-verb agreement and verb tense. Examples include 'I explain you why that center important' (missing verb 'is'), 'If this centre close' (should be 'closes'), and 'it impact very bad' (should be 'it would have a very bad impact'). These errors are noticeable and occasionally distract the reader, although they do not fully impede communication. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, specifically ensuring that verbs agree with their subjects and that tenses are used consistently.
