Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing with regard to the community centre of our area, which is going to close. The centre has played a significant role in my life since I have been suffering from health issues from few weeks, when me and my friends did not get a chance to meet due to our hectic schedule. Further, the young children also come with their parents to play here.

Sports and leisure centres plays a crucial role for society, children and adults like me and my friends get a chance to spend our leisure time with our near and dear ones. Also, these type of places encourage people to focus on their health and help to reduce the stress. Additionally, the sports area increase the harmony and peace among the member of society, which leads to a better and positive environment.

I would like to grab your attention towards the negative impact on the community if the centre closes. Firstly, the children will impacted the most as the outdoor activities are essential for their overall well being. Secondly, the adults who rarely get a chance to step out of their busy schedule. Lastly, the senior citizens who enjoy their walks and spend their quality time with their friends in these centres. I request you to please consider all these effects before taking a final decision. I am looking forward to you.

Yours faithfully

Ana

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly explain how you use the centre, why it is important, and the potential negative effects of its closure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a local council. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed; for instance, the explanation of the negative impact on adults is incomplete, as the sentence 'the adults who rarely get a chance to step out of their busy schedule' lacks a main verb or a clear conclusion regarding the effect of the closure on them. To improve, ensure each point is fully articulated with a clear subject and predicate.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use cohesive devices such as 'Further', 'Also', 'Additionally', and 'Firstly' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as in the final paragraph where the sentence structure is fragmented. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking phrases rather than relying on simple enumerators like 'Firstly' and 'Secondly'.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'hectic schedule', 'crucial role', and 'senior citizens'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'these type of places' (should be 'these types of places') and 'the sports area increase the harmony' (should be 'increases'). While you successfully convey your meaning, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive and lacks the sophistication required for a higher band. Focusing on more precise collocations and ensuring subject-verb agreement with plural nouns will help improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow, such as 'since I have been suffering from health issues from few weeks' (should be 'for a few weeks') and 'the children will impacted the most' (should be 'will be impacted'). Additionally, there are issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'Sports and leisure centres plays' (should be 'play'). While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Proofreading for basic verb forms and prepositions is recommended.
