Write a letter to the local council. In your letter

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my annoyance with your decision about closing the sports centre. My name is Parminder Singh and I am living in Dorval close to our sports centre.

When I heard about the local council will close the club permanently, I was in stress. The sports centre provides several benefits to local society. Firstly, my family and I visit there everyday in the morning and evening for walk and excercise. Apart from this, my freinds also use the centre for playing cricket and gym.

I believe centre is very crucial for everyone living in pur society because people visit here everyday, socialize with each other and spend quality time together while doing physical activities.

If centre closes it could put negative impact on our society, as people would not have options to visit another places. Children can not play or practice their games.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I hope you will find a way to remain sports centre open for everyone.

Yours faithfully,

Parm

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained how you use the centre, why it is important for the community, and the potential negative effects of its closure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a council. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the impact of the closure could be further extended by discussing the health implications or the loss of a community hub in more detail. To improve, try to expand on your points with more specific examples or consequences to demonstrate a deeper engagement with the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Apart from this', and 'If'. While the progression of ideas is easy to follow, the use of linking words is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensure that the transition between sentences feels more natural rather than relying on simple list-like connectors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the range and precision required for a higher band. You use some basic errors in word choice, such as 'I was in stress' (should be 'I was stressed') and 'remain sports centre open' (should be 'keep the sports centre open'). There is also a reliance on simple, everyday language. To improve, aim to use more precise collocations and topic-specific vocabulary related to community services and urban planning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'I am living in Dorval' (should be 'I live in Dorval'), 'When I heard about the local council will close' (should be 'When I heard that the local council would close'), and 'visit another places' (should be 'visit other places'). These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and prepositions.
