Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing in response to the information that I recently heard about our local sports and recreational centre which will be closed soon.
We use this centre along with our friends to develop our physical fitness by utilizing the gym and taking up the in-person functional fitness sessions. Additionally, our parents mainly take part in Yoga and Zumba classes to relax and unwind. In the sports section we particularly enjoy playing badminton as it enhances our social networks.
I strongly believe that the sports and leisure centre are extremely important for our local community as it encourages the new connections and strengthens the relationships in neighbourhood. In addition to that, motivates and involves the youngsters in physical activities during their free time.
Finally, if the centre is closed it would significantly affect the individual mental and physical wellbeing. This is mainly because of the lack of insufficient physical activity. Moreover, the local people need to spend a considerable amount at other fitness centres to acquire these facilities.
I would appreciate your prompt attention to this matter, and I look forward to your response.
Yours faithfully,
Raj Kumar Pratap

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly described how you and your family use the centre, explained its importance to the community, and outlined the negative consequences of its closure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a local council. To reach a higher band, ensure that your arguments are slightly more developed; for instance, when mentioning the 'lack of insufficient physical activity', you could elaborate on the specific health risks or the social isolation that might occur. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a formal closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'In addition to that', and 'Finally' to guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. For example, instead of 'Finally', you might use 'Furthermore, the closure would have detrimental effects on...'. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'physical fitness', 'social networks', and 'prompt attention' are used correctly. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'lack of insufficient' (which is a double negative) and 'acquire these facilities' (which sounds slightly unnatural in this context). To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to community services and health. Despite these minor inaccuracies, your vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as subject-verb agreement errors (e.g., 'the sports and leisure centre are' should be 'is') and the aforementioned 'lack of insufficient' phrasing. Punctuation is generally accurate, and your sentences are mostly clear. To achieve a higher band, focus on eliminating these small errors and increasing the variety of complex sentence structures, such as using more conditional clauses (e.g., 'If the council were to proceed with this closure, the community would suffer...').
