IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Write a letter to the local council. In your letter

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing the letter to provide the importance of the community sports and leisure centre in our area and please do not close it.

The centre which is our locality is beneficial for all age groups. My family and friends are using it to do exercises or spending their quality of time together to do any recreational activities which give peace and relaxation to us.

This community provides many advantages to local people. There are many family programs and learning opportunities held every month that help to reduce stress and unwind from busy days.

If the centre closes it will negatively effect on children, youth and retired people and they will show less interest in physical activities and in maintaining well being which ultimately creates health issues and loss the productivity in people.

I hope you will understand the situation and take steps carefully.

Kind Regards

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain how you use the centre, why it is important, and the potential negative effects of its closure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a council. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For example, the explanation of how the centre is used could be more specific, and the consequences of closure could be expanded with more concrete examples to fully meet the requirements of a higher band. Overall, the response is relevant and covers all parts of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'If the centre closes' and 'This community provides' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases to create a smoother progression of ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is easy to follow, which is a key requirement for this band.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Words like 'recreational', 'beneficial', and 'productivity' are used appropriately. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'loss the productivity' (should be 'a loss of productivity') and 'the letter' (should be 'this letter'). While you communicate your points well, the vocabulary is somewhat limited and lacks the more sophisticated, less common items that would demonstrate a higher level of lexical control. Focusing on collocations and more precise word forms will help you improve.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies. For instance, 'I am writing the letter to provide the importance' is awkward; 'explain the importance' would be better. Additionally, 'The centre which is our locality' is grammatically incorrect; it should be 'The centre in our locality'. There are also issues with verb forms, such as 'are using it to do exercises' (should be 'use it to exercise'). These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to limit the score.
