Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the decision that has recently been taken by the local council for the closer of the one and only community center in the area.
The facility is being used by residents on regular basis. Me with my friends, we play sports, and often organize musical events in the amphitheater inside the building. In last week, my family has celebrated my graduation by organizing a function at the party hall, which was a cheerful event.
I believe that these kinds of facilities are necessary for a residential region, providing it with a common space to come together for recreational and entertainment activities. The infrastructure like such enables people to save the necessary resources such as time and money by keeping such structures close to them.
If the center is closed, it will not be a sound decision to make in the welfare of the residents. The center is a common place of social activities and promotes a happy and healthy lifestyle for the people who live here. I request you to disregard the decision of closing the center, and am inviting you to visit and witness the significance of the space in our lives.
I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Kind regards,
Nishant

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The student has successfully addressed all parts of the prompt in a formal letter format. The response clearly provides details of how the writer and their friends or family use the center, such as playing sports, organizing musical events, and celebrating a graduation in the party hall. Furthermore, the writer explains why the center is important for the local community by providing a common space for recreational and entertainment activities that save time and money. Finally, the effects of the closure are described, noting that it would not be sound for the welfare of residents and would detract from a happy and healthy lifestyle. The tone is appropriate for a local council letter, and the position is clear throughout. The student meets all requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end, following the standard conventions of letter-writing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points, such as personal usage, community importance, and the consequences of closure. Cohesive devices are generally handled well, as seen through transitional phrases like 'The facility is being used', 'I believe that', and 'If the center is closed'. However, referencing and cohesion occasionally feel slightly mechanical or simplistic, such as repetitive starting structures in consecutive sentences. Paragraph transitions are evident, maintaining an overall clear progression of ideas throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, successfully conveying the student's message with a mix of everyday and less common lexical items. Examples such as 'recreational and entertainment activities', 'infrastructure', and 'significance' demonstrate a decent lexical range. However, there are some noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, most notably 'for the closer of' instead of 'for the closure of', and 'In last week' instead of 'Last week'. Additionally, phrases like 'common space' and 'sound decision' are used appropriately. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the lexical score from reaching higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures, such as 'If the center is closed, it will not be a sound decision to make...'. However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward constructions throughout the text. For instance, 'Me with my friends, we play sports' is a non-standard spoken structure, and 'The infrastructure like such enables' contains awkward phrasing. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while the errors occasionally distract the reader, they rarely impede overall communication. The writing shows good intent with complex structures, but control needs to be more consistent for a higher band.
