Write a letter to the local council. In your letter

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to request you for not shutting down our local community centre.

My whole family and friends visit everyday for daily exercise. This centre carries our childhood memories, we used to spend most of our time here playing and swimming. Few friends of mine could not afford a gym membership and they soley rely on this centre.

Sports encourages people from all ages to come together and play under one roof. It encourages the community to excercise and improve their physical abilities Moreover, performing any physical task at your local centre could help in fighting with any disease you might suffer from. Even doctors nowadays, recommend to go for a brisk walk everyday after your dinner.

Closing the centre will lead to many drawbcaks as people would not execrise and the whole community will get obese and may suffer from diabetes and fatty liver concerns. People suffering from financial debts, will no longer get the opportunity for working-out.

I hope you will consider my request. Looking forward to hearing back from you.

Yours sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all three bullet points from the prompt effectively. The student details how they and their friends use the centre, noting that 'My whole family and friends visit everyday for daily exercise' and mentioning childhood memories and swimming. The importance to the local community is explained through the role of sports in bringing people together and promoting health. Finally, the possible effects of closure are clearly described, highlighting concerns like obesity, diabetes, and a lack of workout opportunities for financially disadvantaged residents. The purpose of the letter is clear, and the tone is appropriate for addressing a local council. Ideas are generally well-supported and relevant to the task requirements, matching the requirements for a Band 6.5 to 7.0 range, solidifying a Band 7.0 score for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear opening, body paragraphs addressing different aspects of the prompt, and a formal closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as personal usage, community importance, and the consequences of closure. Cohesive devices are present, such as 'Moreover', 'Even', and 'Closing the centre', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow from the request to the personal connection, community benefits, and negative impacts of shutting down the facility. This aligns well with the Band 6.0 descriptors, as the overall arrangement is coherent despite minor flaws in cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms like 'community centre', 'childhood memories', 'gym membership', and 'financial debts'. However, there are some noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'soley' (spelling error for 'solely'), 'drawbcaks' (spelling error for 'drawbacks'), and 'fighting with any disease' (unnatural collocation; 'fighting against' or 'preventing' would be better). The phrase 'fatty liver concerns' is also somewhat informal and imprecise. Despite these errors, communication is not impeded, and the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, supporting a Band 6.0 score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writing includes a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional and relative clauses ('Few friends of mine could not afford a gym membership and they soley rely on this centre', 'Sports encourages people from all ages to come together and play under one roof'). There are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the text, including 'request you for not shutting down' (unnecessary preposition), 'Sports encourages' (subject-verb agreement error with plural/singular mismatch, though 'sports' can sometimes take a singular verb, 'encourage' is safer here), 'excercise' and 'execrise' (spelling errors affecting accuracy), and missing commas after introductory phrases. While these errors occur frequently, they rarely impede communication, placing the response firmly at Band 6.0.
