Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response successfully covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You provide details of how you and your family use the centre for exercise, relaxation, and yoga. You also explain why the centre is important for the local community, mentioning how children enjoy playing there and how older people use it for walking and jogging to gain mobility. Furthermore, you describe the possible negative effects if the centre closes, noting that it impacts local people negatively and stops events like running and cricket competitions. The tone is appropriate for a general correspondence letter, starting with the requested greeting and concluding with a formal sign-off. Although some ideas could be extended further with additional detail, all aspects of the prompt are addressed adequately, placing this performance at Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The letter demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear purpose established in the opening paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition' and 'If the centre closes' to connect ideas. However, paragraphing is somewhat problematic; the body paragraphs are dense and merge multiple separate concepts together rather than grouping them logically by theme. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'They use it for walking, jogging and running also', where the pronoun linkage is disjointed. While the progression of ideas is generally understandable, the mechanical use of cohesive phrases and weak paragraphing prevent the response from achieving a higher score.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your main points about fitness, community health, and the impact of closure. You attempt some less common vocabulary items such as 'Physiotherapist', 'mobility', and 'flexibility', though there are spelling issues such as 'flexibilty' and 'mobilty'. Other lexical choices are repetitive, relying heavily on basic verbs and adjectives like 'use', 'help', and 'good'. Word choice inaccuracies also appear, such as 'it impacts on people in the negative way' instead of 'it impacts people negatively'. Overall, the lexical range is sufficient to communicate your message, but frequent minor errors place this at Band 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the letter that can cause slight difficulty for the reader. For instance, the opening 'Me and my friends' contains a pronoun error (should be 'My friends and I'), and phrases like 'for yoga also' and 'gain confidence also' display repetitive and unnatural adverb placement. There are also sentence fragments and punctuation issues, such as 'older people who cannot do exercise. They use it...' and 'Whenever women's get free time which results them to spend here.' These persistent errors mean that error-free sentences are not in the majority.
