Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to request that reconsider your decision regarding the closure of the sports and leisure centre in our area.

My friends and I often visit the centre to do physical activities that help us to relax after long hours at school. Other local residents also use the center for meetings to organise an event.

I believe this sports and leisure center is important for the local community because it is the only place where teenagers can play different sports, which helps them to stay physically fit. Moreover, adults and older people can spend their leisure time there with their friends and other family members.

It would have detrimental effects if the centre closes. Firstly, children would not have a place to play sports which require an open field such as cricket and football. Consequently, this closure would force them to stay at home and spend more time on digital devices.

Thank you for reconsidering my request about the closure of the sports and leisure center in our area.

Yours faithfully,

Axay Nayi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The student successfully addresses all three bullet points required in the prompt. First, details of how the writer and their friends or family use the centre are provided, such as visiting for physical activities and using the facility for community meetings. Second, the importance of the centre for the local community is clearly explained regarding teenagers staying physically fit and older people socialising. Third, the possible effects of closure are effectively described, including children losing open fields for sports and spending more time on digital devices. The tone is appropriately formal for a letter to the local council. The response covers all parts well and develops ideas adequately to meet the criteria for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are grouped into logical paragraphs, with a standard opening and closing format suitable for a formal letter. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Firstly', and 'Consequently' are used to connect ideas effectively, although there is a slight mechanical feel to their placement. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, as each main body paragraph handles a distinct aspect of the prompt. Referencing is generally clear, helping the reader follow the writer's arguments without confusion. This performance aligns well with the requirements for a Band 7.0 in this category.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task. Less common lexical items are attempted with some awareness of style and collocation, as seen in phrases like 'detrimental effects', 'physical activities', and 'local residents'. While there are a couple of spelling variations (such as 'center' versus 'centre'), the range used allows the writer to convey their message with reasonable precision. Word choice is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a local authority. Occasional minor inaccuracies do not impede communication, placing the response solidly at Band 6.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The student employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional and relative clauses such as '...sports, which helps them to stay physically fit' and 'It would have detrimental effects if the centre closes.' However, there is a noticeable grammatical error in the opening paragraph: 'I am writing to request that reconsider your decision', where the subject 'you' is omitted after 'that'. Despite this and a few other minor errors, there are frequent error-free sentences, and punctuation is handled well. Control of grammar is generally good, supporting a Band 6.5 score.
