Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to request that reconsider your decision regarding the closure of the sports and leisure centre in our area.
My friends and I often visit the centre to do physical activities that help us to relax after long hours at school. Other local residents also use the centre for meetings to organise an event.
I believe this sports and leisure centre is important for the local community because it is the only place where teenagers can play different sports, which helps them to stay physically fit. Moreover, adults and older people can spend their leisure time there with their friends and other family members.
It would have detrimental effects if the centre closes. Firstly, children would not have a place to play sports which require an open field such as cricket and football. Consequently, this closure would force them to stay at home and spend more time on digital devices.
Thank you for reconsidering my request about the closure of the sports and leisure centre in our area.
Yours faithfully,
Axay Nayi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The student has successfully addressed all bullet points outlined in the prompt. The letter begins with an appropriate purpose explaining how the writer and their friends use the centre, mentioning that they visit for physical activities and to relax after school. The importance of the centre to the local community is clearly explained, highlighting its role for teenagers playing sports and adults spending leisure time. Furthermore, the possible effects of closure are effectively described, particularly regarding children losing access to open-field sports and turning more towards digital devices. All parts of the task are well-covered with relevant ideas, earning a solid band score for task achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter maintains a clear and logical progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the opening purpose of the letter to personal usage, community importance, and finally the negative consequences of closure. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Firstly', and 'Consequently' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the arguments. Paragraphing is handled sufficiently and appropriately for a formal letter format, ensuring the overall arrangement remains coherent and easy to follow from start to finish.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates an adequate and appropriate range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases such as 'detrimental effects', 'physical activities', and 'local residents' show a satisfactory command of language suitable for a semi-formal or formal letter. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, though minor inaccuracies appear, such as the missing verb in the opening sentence ('request that reconsider'). Nevertheless, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message clearly and effectively without impeding communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating good control overall. Examples such as 'Other local residents also use the centre for meetings to organise an event' and 'I believe this sports and leisure centre is important for the local community because it is the only place where...' highlight successful complex structures. However, a noticeable grammatical error occurs in the first sentence: 'I am writing to request that reconsider your decision' (missing the pronoun 'you'). Despite this and a few minor issues, the majority of sentences are clear and do not impede communication.
