Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to inform you about the impact that people of the local community may faced, if town council proceed with the closure of entertainment centrre.
First, my family and friends mostly uses these centre for to release stress caused by demanding jobs or from daily home resposibilities, and rejuvinate themselves by involving them in various activities such playing football along comrades. Another thing is elderly can connect with other peoples which helps to eradicate loneliness. Lastly it provides ample of space for the small kids to play with.
And the closure of leisure facilities means closing the door of becoming active, and which ultimately leads to depression and anxiety, if individuals do not have anything around their facilities to do something for entertainment. This will drastically impacts the society well-being in the long-run.
I urge you to reconsider your decision on closure of entertainment facilities and it would be great if you can retain all of these sports and leisure centres.
Hoping for your positive response.
Your's faithfully,
Hazmina

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The candidate addresses all parts of the task prompt successfully. The letter opens with details of usage, explaining that the family and friends use the centre to release stress and that elderly people can connect with others. Furthermore, the importance for the local community and the negative effects of its potential closure on local people are clearly outlined through mentions of depression, anxiety, and societal well-being. The tone is appropriately formal for a council letter. However, some ideas lack full extension and suffer from slight logical leaps, such as linking a lack of entertainment facilities directly to widespread depression. Despite these minor limitations, the content requirements are fully met, corresponding well to the Band 6.5 or 7 descriptor range. We award a band 6.5 for providing all necessary bullet points with clear, relevant, though occasionally brief, developments.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening, body paragraphs addressing separate bullet points, and an appropriate closing. Paragraphing is utilised adequately to separate the introduction, body ideas, and conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'First', 'Another thing is', 'Lastly', and 'And' are employed to guide the reader through the points. However, some referencing is clumsy, and certain connectors are overly simplistic or incorrectly used at the start of sentences, such as beginning a sentence with 'And'. Paragraph transitions are sometimes mechanical rather than seamless. Overall, the organisation is coherent enough to follow without difficulty, matching the criteria for a band 6.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'rejuvinate', 'eradicate', and 'societal well-being'. However, there are notable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'faced' instead of 'face', 'centrre', 'uses' instead of 'use', 'resposibilities', 'rejuvinate', 'ample of space', and 'impacts' instead of 'impact'. While these errors do not severely impede communication and the intended meaning remains clear, the frequency of lexical inaccuracies prevents the score from reaching higher bands. The vocabulary is minimally sufficient and attempts variety, supporting a band 5.5 score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures such as 'if town council proceed' and 'if individuals do not have anything'. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with multiple errors including subject-verb agreement issues ('people... may faced', 'town council proceed', 'elderly can connect with other peoples'), incorrect prepositions ('playing football along comrades'), and missing articles ('well-being'). Punctuation is also slightly flawed in the sign-off ('Your's faithfully'). Because errors are frequent in complex structures and cause some strain for the reader, this performance aligns best with a band 5.0.
