Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Dear sir or madam,
I am writing this letter to express my interest in becoming the social events organiser during one moth traing programme in the UK. I believe that this would be a great opportunity to develop my organisational skills and also help other participants to enjoy their time in the country.
I would be grateful if you could provide me more information about this role. For example, I would like to know what responsibilities the event organiser would have and how much time i need to require for this role each week. I would also like to ask that there is any fix budget available for arranging the social activities.
I have some experience in organising social events. Last year, I helped to arrange a college cultural evening for around 50 students. My responsibilities were booking a venue, preparing a schedule and also communicating with the participants. I also organised small birthday parties and group outings for my friends. These experiences helped me to develop my communication skills, teamwork and also time-management skills.
Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours faithfully,
Crissa Chen

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 2.5
The response fails to address the task prompt entirely. The prompt asks the writer to write a letter to the local council regarding the potential closure of a local sports and leisure centre, detailing how they use it, why it is important, and the effects of its closure. However, the student has written an application letter for a social events organiser role during a one-month training programme in the UK. This indicates a complete misunderstanding or misreading of the task question, rendering the core content completely off-topic. According to the band descriptors, a response that is largely off-topic cannot achieve a passing score for task achievement. Consequently, this warrants a low band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
Despite the severe off-topic content regarding the task prompt, the internal organisation of the letter is clear and logical. The text is divided into appropriate paragraphs with a clear opening, body paragraphs outlining experience and asking questions, and a standard closing. Cohesive devices such as 'For example', 'Last year', and 'also' are used adequately to link ideas within sentences and paragraphs. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate distinct points, such as role inquiries and past experience. Referencing is generally clear throughout the text, allowing the reader to follow the narrative of the job application smoothly.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for a standard application letter, demonstrating control over everyday topics such as event planning and organisational skills. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'organisational skills', 'cultural evening', and 'time-management skills'. There are a few lexical and typographical errors, such as 'moth' instead of 'month' and 'traing' instead of 'training', alongside an awkward phrase 'how much time i need to require'. However, these errors do not severely impede overall communication, and the vocabulary deployed is sufficient for the task attempted.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as 'I believe that this would be a great opportunity' and 'I would be grateful if you could provide me more information'. There are several grammatical and mechanical errors throughout the response, including uncapitalised pronouns ('i need to require'), spelling errors ('moth traing'), and a minor preposition omission ('ask that there is any fix budget'). However, the sentence structures remain reasonably clear, and the errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the intended meaning of the application letter.
