Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope this letter finds you in good spirits.
I am writing this letter to express my gratitude for having such a fantastic facility in town for the local community. My friends and I have been using this leisure center 5 days a week and we always have fun there.
Having the recreational center in our area is indeed important as it allows every group of people to not only enjoy playing indoor sports but also give a chance to learn new sports under the guidance of professional trainers and athletes. Moreover, it creates a part-time earning platform specifically for students who can earn by teaching elders and children.
It is necessary for the center to be open and available for the local people in town because many young people who are only reliant on the facilities to do practice as there are no other in the nearby area. As a result, we may have to travel roughly an hour to use the sports center of another town in which have to spend extra money in getting new membership.
We are always grateful for the local authority to provide useful facilities, and we obviously do not wish to see closed as it may create a bigger problem in our day-to-day life.
Best regards,
Kishan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points required in the prompt. First, details of usage are clearly stated, noting that the writer and friends use the leisure center 5 days a week for fun. Second, the importance of the center to the community is explained well, highlighting how it provides indoor sports opportunities and part-time jobs for students. Third, the possible effects of its closure are described, including traveling an hour away and incurring extra membership costs. A clear purpose and tone are maintained throughout, satisfying the requirements for a general task 1 letter.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is well-organized with a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as usage, importance, and effects of closure. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well, including transitional phrases like 'Moreover' and 'As a result'. However, some minor referencing issues occur, such as in the phrase 'in which have to spend extra money', where the subject is missing, slightly disrupting the smooth flow of information. Overall, the logical organization is clear.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is generally sufficient for the task, with attempts at less common items such as 'professional trainers', 'recreational center', and 'part-time earning platform'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'reliant on the facilities to do practice' instead of 'to practice', and 'in getting new membership' instead of 'on getting a new membership'. Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary remains adequate to convey the message clearly and appropriately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional ideas. There are several grammatical errors present, such as missing subjects or awkward prepositional usage in sentences like 'in which have to spend extra money' and 'do practice as there are no other in the nearby area'. However, these errors do not impede communication, and the tone remains polite and appropriately formal for a council letter.
