Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope this letter finds you in good spirits.

I am writing this letter to express my gratitude for having such a fantastic facility in town for the local community. My friends and I have been using this center 5 days a week and we always have fun there.

Having the recreational center in our area is indeed important as it allows every group of people to not only enjoy playing indoor sports but also gives a chance to learn new sports under the guidance of professional trainers and athletes. Moreover, it creates a part-time earning platform specifically for students who can earn by teaching elders and children.

It is necessary for the center to be open and available for the local people in town because many young people rely on the facilities to practice as there are no other facilities the nearby area. As a result, we may have to travel roughly an hour to use the sports center of another town in which we have to spend extra money on getting new membership.

We are always grateful for the local authority to provide useful facilities, and we obviously do not wish to see it closed as it may create a bigger problem in our day-to-day life.

Best regards,

Kishan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The candidate has successfully covered all bullet points outlined in the task prompt. In the second paragraph, details are provided regarding how the writer and their friends use the center ('using this center 5 days a week'). The importance of the center for the local community is explained effectively in the third paragraph, highlighting its role in sports training and part-time employment opportunities for students. Furthermore, the potential negative effects of a closure are clearly described in the fourth paragraph, noting that young people would lack facilities and residents would have to travel an hour and incur extra membership costs. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal/formal letter to a local council, and the purpose is clear throughout. The response satisfies all requirements for a Band 7 performance under this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression from the opening statement to the concluding remarks. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from personal usage to community benefits and finally the consequences of closure. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'As a result', and 'and we obviously do not wish' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is handled well, with each main idea receiving its own paragraph. Referencing is generally clear, though paragraph transitions could be slightly more sophisticated to reach higher band levels. Overall, the structural flow is sound and supports clear communication.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating ideas with some precision. Phrases such as 'professional trainers and athletes', 'earning platform', and 'day-to-day life' show an adequate lexical resource. There are also attempts at less common vocabulary items, such as 'gratitude', 'recreational center', and 'incur' (implied context). While some word choices are a bit standard or simple (e.g., 'always have fun there'), the vocabulary is entirely adequate for a General Training Task 1 response, and spelling and word formation are accurate throughout.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The writer displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses and conditional/result structures effectively (e.g., 'as it allows every group of people to not only enjoy playing indoor sports but also gives a chance...', 'as there are no other facilities the nearby area'). Grammatical control is generally strong with numerous error-free sentences. There is a minor prepositional omission ('facilities [in] the nearby area'), but this does not impede communication. Punctuation and sentence boundaries are well-managed, reflecting solid control over the grammar required for this band level.
