Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my gratitute in relation to the local cummunity centre that has opened recently. It is extremely pertinent to mention that this centre is provoding many benefits to our locals including my family. On every evening, my friends and I go to this centre to enjoy some outdoor activities specifically, playing a football. Additionally, My parents visit the centre on every morning to do yogas and some light weight exercises.

I believe, having sports and leisure activities in local areas are exptremenly important as many old people can do physical exercises to keep themselves mentally and physically fit all the day. Moreover, as there is a seperate space for kidsplay, in which children can play many activities and they can enjoy swings, monkey bars etc. which will help them to keep engaged in fun activities instead of wasting time on screen games.

On the other hand, If these centres closes, it will directly effect the healthy lifestyle rotuine of many people. Because, for some people, these centres are the ways to keep thier healthy habits live. As people will indulge back in monotonous and hectic schedule of school or office work and the chances of illness and chronic diseases will rise.

Yours faithfully,

Alex

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student has successfully covered all parts of the prompt in a semi-formal letter format. The response details how the family uses the centre through specific examples, such as the writer playing football with friends in the evening and parents doing yoga and light exercises in the morning. Furthermore, the importance of the centre for the local community is clearly explained, highlighting physical and mental health benefits for both the elderly and children. Finally, the potential negative effects of closure are effectively described, noting the disruption to healthy routines and the potential rise in chronic illnesses. The purpose is clear throughout and ideas are well-supported, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs that address each bullet point in a structured manner. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Additionally', 'Moreover', and 'On the other hand'. However, there are some minor mechanical issues and awkward cohesive transitions, such as 'It is extremely pertinent to mention that...' which sounds overly academic and somewhat unnatural for a standard council letter. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate personal usage, community importance, and the consequences of closure. Overall, the organization demonstrates a clear logical progression, fitting Band 6.5 or a solid 7.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student attempts a range of vocabulary, including less common lexical items such as 'pertinent', 'monotonous', and 'chronic diseases'. However, there are several spelling and word-choice errors that detract from precision, such as 'gratitute' instead of gratitude, 'cummunity' instead of community, 'provoding' instead of providing, and 'exptremenly' instead of extremely. Additionally, collocations like 'doing yogas' (instead of doing yoga) and 'kidsplay' (instead of a play area for kids) show noticeable inaccuracies. While meaning is generally clear, these persistent slips place the lexical performance firmly in the Band 6 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures (e.g., 'If these centres closes, it will directly effect...'). However, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the text. For instance, the subject-verb agreement is flawed in 'centres closes' and the verb 'effect' is incorrectly used instead of the noun 'affect'. There are also awkward prepositional usages, such as 'playing a football' and 'on every evening'. Despite these errors, communication is rarely impeded, reflecting the characteristics of a Band 6 performance.
