Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to inform you that I have been using the local council for years. This council has become comfort place not only for me but for my friends, family and the neighbourhood as well.
I always come with my near and dear ones to attend meetings and to do some yoga classes. I started learning tennis here; now I become professional. I am sure there are so many people like me who learned something from this Centre.
There are so many benefits of this centre; first of all, children spend their leisure time adopting some hobbies here. Second, there is no age restriction here; individuals of every age come here and stay active and healthy. In short, I want to say that this centre is full of opportunities for older people to meet and make some friends.
If the Centre closes, then there might be a chance that lots of students will avoid playing and spend their time on the internet, which is not great for children's health. As the centre is a boon for me, it might be helpful for many students like me. Another concern is that children's cognitive skills will be weak. Local residents avoid exercise, and their health and well-being will be affected.
I would therefore request that the council rethink the decision and keep this council open for the community
your faithfully
Aman Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The student covers all parts of the task well, successfully addressing the three bullet points outlined in the prompt. First, the writer details personal usage of the centre by mentioning attending meetings, yoga classes, and learning tennis ('I started learning tennis here; now I become professional'). Second, the importance of the centre to the local community is explained through benefits such as health, staying active across age groups, and social opportunities for older people. Third, the possible effects of closure are described, focusing on children spending too much time on the internet and a decline in residents' physical health and well-being. The purpose of the letter is clear and maintained throughout, earning a solid Band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter exhibits clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The student uses paragraphing effectively to separate distinct themes, such as personal usage in the second paragraph, community benefits in the third, and potential negative effects of closure in the fourth paragraph. Cohesive devices are employed, although some are a bit mechanical or repetitive, such as 'second of all' and 'in short'. Paragraph transitions generally guide the reader smoothly, though referencing is occasionally slightly ambiguous, such as referring interchangeably to 'council' and 'centre' when discussing the leisure facility. Overall, the structural flow meets the criteria for Band 6.5.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and descriptive phrases such as 'near and dear ones', 'cognitive skills', and 'boon'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as referring to the sports facility as 'the local council' instead of the council-run centre in the opening sentence ('using the local council for years'), and using 'comfort place' instead of 'comfortable place' or 'safe haven'. Spelling is generally correct, but word choice errors occasionally restrict precision, placing this response at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional forms ('If the Centre closes, then there might be a chance that...') and relative clauses. There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as tense inconsistency ('now I become professional' instead of 'have become') and minor preposition or article slips ('avoid playing and spend their time on the internet'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur with enough frequency to prevent the writing from reaching a higher band. The control over grammar is characteristic of Band 6.0.
