Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my thorough concern regarding the Planned Shutting down of our local sports and activity centre.

This recreation centre is a part of the daily routine for both my family and Circle. Particularly, Every Saturday morning, my young children participate in swimming lessons, while my husband and I attend the gym three times weekly. Furthermore, my friends and I frequently gather at the indoor courts to play badminton together on Friday evenings.

This multi-purpose facility is incredibly important for our local community. As a central gathering point, it allows residents of various age groups to stay fit and socialize under one roof. It is also the only affordable venue for youth sports clubs in our neighborhood.

If the centre closes, it will severely affect local people. Many residents will lose their primary space for exercise, which could harm their physical well-being. Additionally, young teenagers will have no productive environment to spend their free time.

Yours faithfully,

Sanket Suthar

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the prompt in a professional and direct manner. You clearly outlined how you and your family use the centre, mentioning swimming lessons and gym attendance, as well as playing badminton with friends. You also explained why the facility is important for the local community by highlighting its role as a central gathering point and an affordable venue for youth sports clubs. Furthermore, the potential negative effects of closure, such as the loss of primary exercise space and a lack of productive environments for teenagers, are well described. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a local council, and all aspects of the task are fully developed, earning a well-deserved Band 8.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter is structured very logically with a clear introduction, well-developed body paragraphs addressing different aspects of the prompt, and a polite sign-off. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as personal usage versus community importance. Cohesive devices like 'Furthermore', 'As a central gathering point', and 'Additionally' are employed effectively to guide the reader smoothly through your arguments without mechanical repetition. Referencing is clear throughout the text, ensuring that ideas flow naturally from one sentence to the next. This strong organizational structure fully satisfies the criteria for Band 7.5.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is sufficiently wide and precise for the task. You successfully incorporated natural phrases such as 'daily routine', 'multi-purpose facility', and 'physical well-being'. There are minor lexical inaccuracies, such as capitalizing 'Planned Shutting down' unnecessarily and using 'Circle' instead of 'circle of friends', but these do not impede communication. You also attempted less common vocabulary items like 'productive environment' and 'primary space'. With a slightly broader range of sophisticated collocations, this could reach even higher bands, but it comfortably sits at a Band 7.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You demonstrated good control of grammar and punctuation across a variety of sentence structures. Your response features a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'Particularly, Every Saturday morning, my young children participate in swimming lessons, while my husband and I attend the gym three times weekly.' While there is a minor punctuation and capitalization slip ('Particularly, Every'), the majority of your sentences are accurate and grammatically sound. Complex structures are handled with good control, and errors are rare and non-systematic, meaning they never impede the reader's understanding. This performance aligns well with a Band 7.5.
