Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to request you to change your thoughts on the sports center reconstuction. I would like to share my experience regarding the sport center, and it has some useful impacts on our community.
Last year, I have joined this center with my friends and I was amazed to exeperience some useful facilities like playing area, gym and so on. I often visit this area with my friends after school and we play a basketball everyday during the evenings. My family usually go there on weekends to recharge their batteries.
I consider, this center has some great benefits towards our community. One of the major imapct is that it gives the chance to the community to get together, especially during the weekends because of their busy schedule and I found this is the best place to relax.
If the center closes, then it will bring some negative impacts on our community. Firstly, their social bonding will intrupt this is because this place is the only way where people usually spend their time to talk each other in their free time. Therefore, people will loose their social interaction. Secondly, it is hard to find other place in our city for doing physical exercise and other sports facilities.
I appreciate to you kindly reconsider your decision. Thank you!
Yours sincerely,
Ramandeep kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter successfully covers all the bullet points outlined in the task prompt. The writer details how the centre is used by family and friends, mentioning the gym, playing areas, playing basketball in the evenings, and weekend relaxation. The importance of the sports and leisure centre to the local community is explained, specifically highlighting its role in bringing people together despite busy schedules. Furthermore, the possible negative effects of closure are clearly described, noting the disruption of social bonding and the difficulty of finding alternative exercise facilities locally. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a local council, maintaining a clear purpose throughout. Although some ideas could be slightly more fully extended to reach the highest bands, all requirements of the task are adequately met, corresponding well to a Band 7.0 performance.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression from the opening statement through to the conclusion. Paragraphs are used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the introduction, personal use, community importance, negative effects of closure, and the final call to action. Cohesive devices are generally used well, such as sequencing words like 'Firstly' and 'Secondly', and transition markers such as 'Therefore'. However, referencing is occasionally imprecise, and some sentences could flow more smoothly together. For instance, the transition between sentences in the second paragraph ('I often visit this area with my friends after school and we play a basketball everyday during the evenings') could be tighter. Overall, the structural progression is clear, making the letter easy to follow and justifying a Band 6.5.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating an attempt to incorporate less common items and community-focused phrasing, such as 'recharge their batteries', 'social bonding', and 'physical exercise'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'reconstuction' instead of reconstruction, 'exeperience' instead of experience, 'imapct' instead of impact, 'intrupt' instead of interrupt, and 'loose' instead of lose. These errors slightly detract from the precision of the writing, though they do not impede overall communication. The writer has a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey their message clearly, but inaccuracies in spelling and collocation place this submission firmly within the Band 6.0 category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar with structures such as conditional and reason clauses ('If the center closes, then it will bring some negative impacts...'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasings. Examples include 'request you to change your thoughts on' instead of asking you to reconsider, 'playing area' missing an article or plural form, 'a basketball' instead of basketball, 'My family usually go' where 'family' takes a singular verb 'goes', and 'I appreciate to you kindly reconsider' which mixes verb patterns incorrectly. While communication is never severely impeded, the frequency of these grammatical and punctuation inaccuracies means the writing does not sustain error-free sentences long enough to reach Band 6.5, fitting a solid Band 6.0.
