Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my concern regarding the permanent closure of the local community centre.

Over the past two years, I join a fitness club in this community centre and I usually come here after my work to recharge my battery. The centre has many facilities like a swimming pool, gym, playing area and many more. My parents also visit this place on the regular basis to spend their leisure time.

The community sport centre is beneficial for our local community in terms of their fitness because many people spend most of their time in fitness area and they feel so relaxed. Children usually come with their friends for playing sports.

If the centre closes, it will bring some negative impacts on our society. One of the main reasons is the fitness area because people usually join this centre to work on their physical health. Secondly, children love to play sports together, especially after school because this place is perfect for their mental as well as physical development.

I would really appreciate it if you could reconsider your decision. This will really benefit for our community. Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Ramandeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all bullet points outlined in the task instructions. You begin the letter by clearly detailing how you and your family use the centre, mentioning that you visit after work to recharge and that your parents visit regularly for leisure. You then explain its importance to the local community in terms of fitness, health, and social interaction for children. Furthermore, you effectively describe the possible effects of its closure, noting negative impacts on physical and mental development. Your purpose is entirely clear throughout, and the tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a local council. This performance fully aligns with the requirements for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter has a clear overall progression and logical organisation. It follows standard letter-writing conventions, starting with an appropriate salutation and ending with a proper sign-off. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate different ideas, such as usage details, community importance, and the consequences of closure. Cohesive devices are generally handled well, though some transitions between sentences could be smoother, and words like 'because' and 'and' are relied upon frequently. Referencing is mostly clear, ensuring the reader can easily follow your arguments. This represents a solid Band 6.5 performance.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms such as 'permanent closure', 'leisure time', 'mental as well as physical development', and 'reconsider your decision'. However, there are some minor word-choice and collocation errors, such as saying 'I join a fitness club' instead of 'I joined' or 'I am a member', and using 'playing area' instead of more precise sporting terminology. While you attempt some less common items, occasional inaccuracies prevent you from reaching a higher band. Overall, your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your message clearly, fitting the Band 6.0 criteria.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

Your writing features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional structures ('If the centre closes, it will bring some negative impacts') and relative clauses. However, there are several grammatical errors that catch the reader's attention. For example, mixing past and present tenses ('Over the past two years, I join...') and a preposition error in 'benefit for our community' instead of 'benefit our community'. Despite these errors, they rarely impede overall communication, and your basic meaning remains clear. This is indicative of a Band 6.0 level.
