Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to express my concern about the possible closure of out local sports and leisure centre, which is an important facility for many people in out community.

My family and friends use the centre regularly, particulary in the evening and at weekends. I usually go there three or four times a week to use the gym and swimming pool, while my wife attends yoga classes. My daugther also takes part in swimming lessons and other activities organised for children. In addition, my friends play badminton and use the fitness facilities at the centre.

The sports and leidure centre is extremely important to the local community becuase it provides affordable opportunities for people of all ages to exercise and socialise. It also encorages children and young people to lead an active lifestyles, while older residents can use the facilities to stay health and connected with others. Moreover, the centre brings local people together and helps create a stronger sense of community.

If the centre closes, many local residents may have fewer opportunities to exercise, especially those who cannot afford expensive private gyms. Furthermore, children may have to travel much further for swimming lessons and other sports activities, which could discourage them for praticipating. As a result, the closure could negatively affect both physical helath and social wellbeing of local residents.

I hope you will look in this matter urgently and prompt action as soon as possible.

Yours faithfully,

Darshit

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response covers all parts of the task effectively. You successfully outlined how you and your family use the centre, such as going to the gym and swimming pool, attending yoga classes, and participating in children's swimming lessons. Furthermore, you clearly explained why the centre is important for the local community by mentioning its role in providing affordable exercise opportunities and fostering a sense of community. Finally, you described the possible negative effects of closure, including reduced opportunities for residents and negative impacts on physical health and social wellbeing. Your tone is consistently appropriate for a formal letter to the local council, and your ideas are well-developed throughout. This meets the criteria for a strong performance on this task.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0

Your letter shows clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, beginning with the purpose of the letter, followed by how your family uses the facility, why it is important, the consequences of closure, and finally a concluding call to action. You used cohesive devices effectively, such as 'In addition', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore', to link your ideas smoothly. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate each main point, making the letter easy to follow and navigate from the reader's perspective.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You demonstrated a sufficient range of vocabulary with some good lexical choices such as 'affordable opportunities', 'social wellbeing', and 'urgently'. However, there are a few spelling and typographical errors, such as 'out' instead of 'our' in the first paragraph, 'particulary' instead of 'particularly', 'daugther' instead of 'daughter', 'leidure' instead of 'leisure', 'becuase' instead of 'because', 'encorages' instead of 'encourages', 'lifestyles' instead of 'lifestyle', 'health' instead of 'healthy', 'praticipating' instead of 'participating', and 'helath' instead of 'health'. Despite these occasional errors, your vocabulary is adequate to convey your message clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional structures ('If the centre closes, many local residents may...') and relative clauses ('...who cannot afford expensive private gyms'). There are a few grammatical slips and typos, such as missing prepositional control in the final sentence ('look in this matter' instead of 'look into') and missing a verb ('prompt action as soon as possible' instead of 'take prompt action'). However, the majority of your sentences are clear, and these minor errors do not impede communication at all.
