Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

The intention of my email today is to formally request authorization to access local community centre located in the centre of city, which is getting closed under reformed regulations.

Addressing the importance the property for local community directly, the centre is used by many families during weekend to spend quality time with their children and close-knit members. Additionally, the community centre features gym with sophisticated machines, which is centre of attraction for many younger people, whereas the garden with lush green grass is covered by senior citizens to refresh their mind while having interesting conversation with their friends.

Considering the fact that, there is only one well maintained sports and pasttime activity place in the city, closing it would allow many people to join private sports centre that is less economical for many people. In particular, many sports competetions are organized in the community building.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response covers all three bullet points from the prompt, touching on how families use the centre, its importance to the local community, and the effects of its potential closure. However, there is a misunderstanding of the task premise: instead of writing to protest a closure, the opening states an intention to 'formally request authorization to access local community centre'. This misdirects the purpose of the letter slightly. Furthermore, the response falls short of the minimum length requirement of 150 words, coming in at 149 words, which results in a penalty under Task Achievement. Ideas are present but remain somewhat under-developed due to the restricted word count and occasional lack of clarity in addressing the council's perspective.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter maintains a reasonably clear overall arrangement, starting with an appropriate salutation and moving logically through community usage, importance, and consequences of closure. Paragraphing is utilized to separate different aspects of the prompt. However, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or awkward, such as 'Addressing the importance the property for local community directly', which sounds forced and unnatural. Referencing and conjunctions are basic, and some transitions between sentences lack smoothness. Overall, the organization is coherent enough to follow without difficulty, though the progression could be managed with greater flexibility and natural linking words to reach higher bands.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, attempting some less common collocations and topic-specific items like 'sophisticated machines', 'senior citizens', and 'pasttime activity place'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and missing prepositions, such as 'importance the property for local community' (missing 'of' and 'the'), 'getting closed' (rather than 'facing closure'), and a spelling error in 'competetions'. Phrasing often feels translated or unnatural, such as 'refresh their mind' instead of 'relax' or 'rejuvenate'. The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message, but inaccuracies in word choice and collocation prevent it from reaching a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over subordinate clauses, as seen in 'whereas the garden with lush green grass is covered by senior citizens...'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and missing articles throughout the text, such as 'access local community centre' (missing 'the'), 'in centre of city' (missing 'the' and 'the'), and 'features gym' (missing 'a'). Additionally, 'is covered by senior citizens' is an inappropriate verb choice, likely intended to mean 'used' or 'frequented'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur regularly enough to restrict the score to a band 5.5.
