Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir.

I am writing to praise the centre which recenly has been opened for local people named, Bharat Community Centre. This place provides maximum sport activities such as Badminton, tennis, volleyball and free time activities like yoga class, gym class , etc.

My family members and friends are thrilled to take significant benefits of the centre by performing stretching exercises and yoga on daily basis in the centre. This place is crucial for people in local community because it promotes healthy lifestyle and good habbits.Consequently, sports and leisure centre plays significant role in every individual's life.

If under any circumstance the centre closes, it reflects several harsh effects on local people, as it breaks the daily routine of many masses. People might suffer with numerous health issues due to the break in healthy routine.

It would be really appreciated if the centre continues to play its part.

Yours sincerely,

Richa

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The candidate has addressed all parts of the prompt satisfactorily. The letter provides details of how the family and friends use the centre, such as doing stretching exercises and yoga on a daily basis. The importance of the facility is explained through its promotion of a healthy lifestyle and good habits. Furthermore, the possible effects of closure are clearly described, noting that it would break daily routines and potentially cause health issues among local people. However, the tone is slightly confused at the beginning, as the writer states they are writing to 'praise' a centre that is actually facing closure, which indicates a slight misunderstanding of the typical purpose of such a council complaint letter. Nevertheless, the content covers all bullet points adequately, placing this response at Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter is generally coherent and follows a logical overall arrangement. Ideas are broken down into appropriate paragraphs, starting with an introduction and the usage details, moving on to the importance and effects of closure, and ending with a brief concluding sentence. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Consequently' and 'If under any circumstance', though some referencing and linking feels a bit mechanical or unnatural, for instance, 'it reflects several harsh effects' instead of 'there would be several harsh effects'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently, and the letter format is respected overall despite the slightly non-standard opening salutation 'Dear sir.' Overall, the organisational structure is clear enough to earn a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'promote healthy lifestyle', 'significant benefits', and 'daily routine'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'recenly' (spelling error), 'take significant benefits' (should be 'reap significant benefits'), 'habbits' (spelling error), and 'suffer with numerous health issues' (typically 'suffer from'). The phrase 'many masses' is also unnatural. While these errors do not impede communication, they restrict the lexical score. Therefore, a Band 5.5 is appropriate, reflecting an adequate range with noticeable errors that prevent it from reaching Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar with conditional structures like 'If under any circumstance the centre closes, it reflects several harsh effects'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'centre which recenly has been opened' (word order/tense), 'on daily basis' (missing article), and 'It would be really appreciated if' (passive structure could be smoother, though acceptable). Punctuation errors also appear, such as spacing issues before commas and periods, and the opening salutation missing proper capitalization for 'sir'. These recurring mistakes place the grammatical control firmly at Band 5.5.
