Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear sir,

I am writing this letter to show my gratitude for the services provided by the local community for instance, sports and leisure center and want to explain the reasons which make this centre crucial for the local individuals. Since 2004, this certre have been contributing in people lives in maintaing their healthy life. Not only senior citizens come there to play badminton but also youth and adults found this cerntre beneficials.

These days, because of the hectic schedule of people whether they are studying or maintaing work life balance have limited sources to live healthy life. Since this centre opened, local citizens are delighted from the services of the centre and want to utilizes in the futre as well.

From past few days, there is a rumors regarding the sports and leisure centre that it is possibility of closing of this centre. If this happend, more and more citizens will be effected from this decision. Not only people's health will suffer as this is the only centre in the local area where elderly people excercise but also there will be few leisure activities which contribute in children's future because this centre help them in overall their development. Whether physically or mentally.

If this romor is true, I would insist the local community to reconside the decision.

Your faithfully,

XYZ

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The candidate addresses all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You successfully explain how you use the centre, mentioning that senior citizens, youth, and adults engage in activities like badminton. You also highlight why the centre is crucial for maintaining a healthy lifestyle amidst hectic modern schedules, and describe the negative effects of its closure on physical health and children's development. However, the tone fluctuates slightly, and some ideas are a bit repetitive, such as repeatedly mentioning health and general services. The purpose of the letter is clear, but the development of ideas could be more precise. Therefore, this performance meets the criteria for Band 6.0, as all parts of the prompt are covered, though some areas remain somewhat underdeveloped.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter is organised into clear paragraphs, including an appropriate opening and closing, showing a logical structure overall. You attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'Not only... but also' and 'Since this centre opened'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical, as seen in awkward transitions like 'From past few days' and 'If this happend'. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion within paragraphs occasionally feels disjointed due to grammatical friction and abrupt shifts between ideas. This level of organisation aligns with the Band 6 descriptor, where the overall arrangement is coherent, but referencing and cohesive devices are sometimes faulty.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your main points regarding the sports centre and community wellbeing. You attempt some less common lexical items, such as 'gratitude', 'maintaining', and 'beneficials', but these are often accompanied by word-choice and spelling errors (e.g., 'certre' instead of centre, 'utilizes' instead of utilise, 'romor' instead of rumour). Spelling mistakes and slight lexical inaccuracies occur with some frequency, though they do not seriously impede communication. This performance fits the Band 5.5 to 6.0 range; given the attempts at less common vocabulary combined with noticeable spelling errors, a score of 5.5 is appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures such as 'If this happend, more and more citizens will be effected'. However, the writing contains frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding verb tenses ('this certre have been contributing', 'youth and adults found... beneficials'), passive voice ('will be effected' instead of affected), and subject-verb agreement. Punctuation is also erratic in places, with sentence fragments like 'Whether physically or mentally.' These errors require some effort from the reader to decode, placing the grammar firmly in the Band 5 category where frequent errors persist and attempts at complex structures often contain faults.
