Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing this letter to explain why the sports and leisure centre is essential for the community.
Firstly, the centre provides best quality time to my family and friends. They enjoy playing together and arranging activities there. Me and my friends like to spend our leisure time in the centre by playing board games and cricket since these games are the escape from the academic pressure. Secondly, the sports and leisure centre is crucial for the area people because their children are learning new skills and the centre provides enough resources to those who wants to build their career in sports.
Finally if the centre closes then there are several concequences which are faced by the community people. Higher screen time of children is the main possible effect as they will not going out of the house for playing with each other. The life of working professionals and others' will become more stressful and tedious as there will be no near by place to relax. The personal connection between the community will be lost since they will not going to spend quality time with each other.
I hope you consider my explaination and keep the centre open for the local community.
Your faithful,
Vijay

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, establishing a clear purpose right from the opening paragraph. You clearly explain how you and your friends use the centre for board games and cricket to escape academic pressure. Furthermore, you describe the benefits for local children and elaborate on the negative consequences of a potential closure, such as increased screen time and a loss of community connection. While all bullet points are covered and extended with relevant details, some ideas show a minor tendency to over-generalise, such as the claim about working professionals losing all nearby places to relax. Nevertheless, your position is maintained consistently throughout the letter, earning a solid rating for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
Your letter demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, logical progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. The response is divided into appropriate paragraphs, each focusing on a distinct aspect of the task. You make use of standard cohesive devices and transition signals such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Finally' to guide the reader smoothly through your arguments. However, referencing and cohesive devices occasionally feel a bit mechanical or basic, and some transitional links between sentences within paragraphs could be integrated more fluidly to reach the highest standards of logical flow. Overall, the organisation is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, providing sufficient range to express your ideas about the community centre. You attempt some less common and topic-specific vocabulary such as 'academic pressure', 'working professionals', and 'leisure time'. However, there are some noticeable vocabulary and spelling inaccuracies that prevent a higher score, such as 'best quality time' instead of 'quality time', 'area people' instead of 'local residents', and the spelling error 'concequences' instead of 'consequences'. Word choice is generally appropriate for communication, though phrasing in places relies on simpler lexical items and minor collocation slips.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating your ability to construct multi-clause sentences such as conditional structures ('Finally if the centre closes then there are several concequences...'). However, control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures present, including subject-verb agreement issues ('Me and my friends like', 'those who wants'), pronoun misuse ('they will not going out'), and incorrect prepositions ('in the centre' versus 'at the centre'). Punctuation slips, such as missing commas after introductory transition words, also occur. These errors require some effort to decode in places, though they rarely impede overall communication.
