Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Sir,

My name is Miral Ahir. I am writing this letter to request to you will not close the sprot centre.

First of off, we enjoy the sport centre vary well because it helps to maintain our fitness. Generally, large number of people in our area who visit the sport centre. especially, children use it more because at this place they meet their friends and spend some together there.

Moreover, sports and leisure centre is very crucial for the local community because nowadays, people are more busy in their daily life. So, they cannot have much time to spend with their family and friends. So, this a pne place where they can go with them and play some games and sit together there and feel relax after visiting this place.

If you could close the center, it gives very bad effects on local community because In todays era, people cannot have much space for spending their leisure time because in city area fully consnctred it is not have empty space.

I hope you will unerstand our situation and cannot close sport and leisure centre. I look forword your positive response as soon as possible.

Yours faithfully,

Miral Ahir.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt, addressing all three bullet points required in the task instructions. The writer explains how the sport centre is used by family and friends, details its importance to the local community as a space to connect, and describes the negative effects of its potential closure. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, the explanation of how people use the centre is somewhat repetitive and relies on general statements rather than extended detail. The tone is appropriately formal for a letter to a council, maintaining a clear purpose throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning and ending, adopting standard letter-writing conventions. Paragraphing is utilised to separate distinct points, moving from personal use to community importance and finally to the consequences of closure. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical, with an over-reliance on basic transition words like 'First of off' and repetitive use of 'So' to link clauses. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as when pronouns like 'it' refer back ambiguously to previous concepts, which affects the smoothness of the progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating everyday concepts relating to health, leisure, and community spaces. There are, however, noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word form that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include spelling mistakes such as 'sprot' and 'consnctred', as well as awkward collocations like 'vary well' instead of 'very well' or 'enjoy a lot'. While the writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'crucial' and 'leisure', these lexical slips prevent the response from achieving a higher rating.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at structures like subordinate clauses and conditional constructions. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly involving verb patterns, articles, and prepositions inside grammatical structures. Notable issues include 'request to you will not close', 'people are more busy in their daily life', 'this a pne place', and 'It gives very bad effects'. While these errors are noticeable and require some effort to decode, they rarely impede overall communication entirely.
