Write a letter to the local council. In your letter

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to give you feedback on why this facility is important to the local people and me.

I often visit this centre with my friends and family during the weekend in the morning. We usually play basketball and badminton. Even though my grandfather also likes to join me in the morning for yoga class.

According to me, a sports and leisure centre is really important for local people to stay healthy and relax from their hectic schedules. It also gives people to meet other people in the area in the same place and socialize with each other.

If the centre closes down, local people will stop doing exercise because other facilities are expensive. Children also stop playing outside and become addicted to their mobile phones. As a result, people become less productive and become lazy.

I would be truly grateful if you could run this council forever for the local people. And find a possible way to keep it open.

Yours faithfully,

Kevin

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You successfully address all parts of the task prompt, covering how you and your family use the centre, why it is important for the community, and the possible negative effects if it closes. Your opening details your weekend visits and sports activities such as basketball and badminton. The explanation of its community importance, such as staying healthy and socializing, is clear. However, some ideas show a tendency to be a bit generalized and under-developed, which keeps this response from reaching a higher band. For example, your description of the effects on local people, like children becoming addicted to mobile phones, is introduced quickly without deep expansion. Nonetheless, you maintain a clear purpose and position throughout the letter, fully covering the necessary bullet points.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter has a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas from personal use to community importance and finally to the consequences of closure. You use appropriate paragraphing to separate your introduction, main body points about usage and impact, and your closing request. Cohesive devices and referencing are used adequately, such as 'Even though', 'It also gives', and 'If the centre closes down'. However, cohesion can sometimes feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in how sentences are linked, such as beginning consecutive sentences with 'It also' or 'As a result'. To move closer to a higher band, you could use a wider and more flexible range of transitional expressions to connect your ideas more fluidly without relying on formulaic transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'facility', 'hectic schedules', 'socialize', and 'productive'. You attempt some less common vocabulary, but there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies that show limitations. For instance, writing 'According to me' instead of 'In my opinion', or stating that people 'relax from their hectic schedules' rather than 'unwind' or 'take a break from', reveals unnatural phrasing. Additionally, phrases like 'run this council forever' are awkward in this context. While these vocabulary errors do not prevent your meaning from coming across, they restrict your score because they highlight a lack of precision and style control characteristic of higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional clauses ('If the centre closes down, local people will stop doing exercise...') and concessive clauses ('Even though my grandfather also likes...'). There are some errors in grammar, such as tense and clause integration in 'Even though my grandfather also likes to join me in the morning for yoga class', which stands as a fragment rather than a fully integrated subordinate clause. You also write 'Children also stop playing outside and become addicted', where 'will' or 'might' would be more accurate for future predictions. However, these grammar and punctuation errors are moderate and rarely impede communication, allowing your message to be understood easily.
