Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Respected Sir/Madam,

I am writing to express my concern regarding the burning question. I have heard news that the city center is going to be closed forever for public by the administration.

Firstly, I would like to inform you that the centre hold a vital role in my society. My whole family and friends would use the sports center to do their day to day activity as well as everyone would like to celebrate their special occations at the city center because of the avaibility of wide area in the garden and pleasent environment which makes the occation more special.

Furthermore, I would like to mention that people of my area love to invest their leisure time in city center by talking with their close ones. By doing exercise and yoga, people can enjoy the calm environment of the center which thereby, boost their daily routine.

In addition, I would say that the some possible effects can be seen such as people can feel disheartned and frustrated. By not having a place to meet thier loved ones on regularly ,they might be start feeling lonely. I would like to request you to delay the idea of closing the sports city center untill some possible solutions could be found.

I would be grateful if you could consider my request at your earliest convenience. I hope to get a positive response from you.

Yours faithfully,

Poonam Sharma

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, successfully covering how the family uses the centre, why it is important for the community, and the potential effects of its closure. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or repetitive in nature, which is characteristic of the mid-six band. For instance, the details of how the centre is used are somewhat generalised with phrases like 'day to day activity' rather than being fully extended with specific examples. The letter format is generally appropriate for a formal council request, maintaining an earnest tone throughout, although the opening salutation 'Respected Sir/Madam' is a bit non-standard for IELTS formal letters. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to expand on the specific activities undertaken at the facility and provide more concrete elaboration on the community benefits rather than relying on broader statements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression from personal usage to community benefits and finally to the potential negative impacts of closure. Paragraphing is utilised to separate distinct ideas, such as usage, benefits, and consequences. However, cohesion at times feels a bit mechanical or repetitive, with transitions like 'Furthermore, I would like to mention' and 'In addition, I would say that' appearing formulaic rather than naturally integrated. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as the pronoun use in sentences like 'people can enjoy the calm environment of the center which thereby, boost their daily routine.' To move beyond the current band, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure that referencing between clauses is seamless and unobtrusive.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully communicating the core message with appropriate terms such as 'leisure time,' 'calm environment,' and 'frustrated.' However, there are noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice and spelling that prevent a higher score. Examples of lexical slips include 'occations' (occasions), 'avaibility' (availability), 'pleasent' (pleasant), 'disheartned' (disheartened), and 'thier' (their). Furthermore, expressions like 'burning question' and 'sports city center' feel unnatural in this context, revealing an attempt to use less common vocabulary that results in awkward collocations. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand lexical precision, eliminate spelling errors, and use vocabulary that collocates naturally in formal correspondence.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordinate clauses with structures such as 'By doing exercise and yoga, people can enjoy...' and 'I would be grateful if you could consider...'. However, there are several errors in grammar and punctuation that persist throughout the text, including tense shifts and modal confusion, such as 'My whole family and friends would use' and 'they might be start feeling lonely.' There are also issues with prepositions and articles, as seen in 'hold a vital role in my society' instead of 'plays' and 'on regularly' instead of 'regularly.' While these errors rarely impede overall communication, their frequency prevents the writing from displaying the frequent error-free sentences required at the next level. Improved control over verb phrases and prepositional patterns will elevate this score.
