Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to bring your attention to urgent matter of closing the playing area in our neighourhood. I was 8 years old since this city play area is opened and all the kids of my generation used to be spend ou time over here. This centre is used by my friend and family to entertain themselves. Now my children practice their games at evening to get prepae for the future goals and my parents do walk and jog to stay healthy.

It is very prominent for the residential people of our near by because they do not have any other stadium or ground where their kids enjoy their games.

If this centre will be closed then it will have so many disadvantages to our local community. There will be no place for teens, senior citizens to do physical activities to keep them fit. It is my request to council to take this matter seriously and issue the immediate notice to not shut down the leisure centre. i would be grateful to you.

Yours sincerely,

Joban

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response covers all parts of the prompt, successfully fulfilling the requirements for general task formatting and content. You provide details of how your family uses the centre, explaining that your children practice their games and your parents go for walks. You also explain its importance for the local community and describe the negative effects of closure, such as leaving teenagers and senior citizens without a place for physical activities. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, the description of how you and your family use the centre is quite brief and personal, whereas the community impacts are touched on generally. To reach the next level, you would need to extend and support all your main ideas more evenly throughout the letter, providing deeper context and clearer elaboration on every point.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear purpose and a recognizable letter format, beginning appropriately with a salutation and closing with a sign-off. Paragraphing is used to separate your personal background, the community importance, and the consequences of closure. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or features faulty referencing. For example, sentences in the opening paragraph like 'I was 8 years old since this city play area is opened' lack smooth transitional flow, and referencing pronouns like 'it' are occasionally confusing. To achieve a higher band, you need to ensure that information and ideas are logically sequenced throughout with more flexible and natural cohesive devices, avoiding abrupt shifts between sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, successfully communicating your message about the leisure centre. You attempt less common vocabulary items and functional phrases, such as 'residential people', 'physical activities', and 'leisure centre'. However, there are noticeable lexical resource limitations, word-choice errors, and spelling mistakes that prevent a higher score. For instance, you wrote 'neighourhood' instead of neighbourhood, 'prepae' instead of prepare, and used 'prominent' where 'important' or 'significant' would be more appropriate collocation. To move into the next band, you should expand your range of less common lexical items, use more precise collocations, and minimize spelling and word-choice errors so that your expression is completely natural and accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, such as conditional structures ('If this centre will be closed then it will have...'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede overall communication. For example, your tense control is inconsistent, seen in phrases like 'I was 8 years old since this city play area is opened' and the incorrect future conditional phrasing 'If this centre will be closed'. Additionally, there are minor punctuation lapses, such as the lowercase 'i' in the final paragraph. To reach a higher score, you need to produce a greater frequency of error-free sentences, demonstrate better control over complex structures, and maintain consistent tense accuracy across all parts of your writing.
