Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express gratitude on behalf of the Caledonia local community for well-established city center for wellness and health facilities. We couldn't imagine what would have happened if the local council closes the centre for sports and leisure activities.

My family and close friends use the centre for multiple health activities including a gym equipments and playing sports such as pickleball and tennis on courts. Additionally, they feel great having an access of a high-standared wellbeing programmes organized in the city centre.

Since most of the city population is getting old, it is important to maintain health of senior citizens by the city council for their well-being mental and physical health. Moreover, elderely couples want to spend quality time together by playing sports and lying down on couches and enjoying massage on couple chairs.

It could have been a disastrous for the Caledonia city if we would not have centres opened all the time. Many people will have to find alternative centres in different cities and it will take a time to reaching out there and not getting same benefits they get here locally.

I request you on behalf the entire community not to close the city centres. Please look into this matter with high-priority and I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Viral Siddhapura

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt, addressing how the family and friends use the centre, why it is important for the local community, and describing the potential negative effects of its closure. The position is clear throughout the letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven, reflecting a solid understanding of the task requirements while leaving certain points partially supported. For example, the description of how senior citizens use the facilities includes some slightly repetitive or less extended explanations, such as mentioning playing sports alongside lying down on couches. To reach a higher standard, all ideas would need to be fully elaborated with more precise and extended supporting details throughout every paragraph.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning and ending appropriate for a formal letter to a local council. Information is grouped logically into distinct paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt, such as personal usage, community importance, and consequences of closure. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Additionally' and 'Moreover', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in their placement. Referencing between sentences is generally clear, but the logical progression occasionally stumbles due to abrupt shifts in ideas. To achieve a higher level of cohesion, the flow between paragraphs could be smoothed by employing a wider variety of sophisticated cohesive links and ensuring seamless transitions from personal examples to broader community impacts.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the writer's message regarding the sports and leisure centre. There are successful attempts to use less common vocabulary items, such as 'well-established', 'disastrous', and 'high-priority'. However, noticeable word choice, collocation, and phrasing errors occur throughout the text, such as 'health activities', 'an access of', and 'high-standard wellbeing programmes', where prepositions and word forms are imprecise. Spelling is generally accurate, but awkward phrasing like 'take a time to reaching out there' limits precision. To improve this criterion, the writer needs to demonstrate more control over less common lexical items and ensure natural collocations and accurate word forms are consistently applied.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting various structures such as conditional and relative clauses. There are some noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly involving verb tenses and articles, such as 'what would have happened if the local council closes' and 'take a time to reaching out'. However, these errors rarely impede overall communication, and the meaning remains clear. To reach a higher standard of grammatical accuracy and range, the writer must exercise better control over tense consistency, avoid awkward gerund or infinitive patterns, and eliminate recurring article errors to produce a greater proportion of error-free sentences.
