Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
It has come to my attention that the local council might be shuting down the entertainment centre soon. I am writing to request you to reconsider your decision. Alot of people visit the centre very frequently, that includes my family, friends and myself. It is a great way to enagage with each other. the centre is particualry good for the children, since there is nothing else near by for entertainment purposes. My friends and I use the centre for playing tennis and basketball every evening, while the kids can play in the pool or indoor games available at the centre.
These types of sport centres are very essential for the local commuity. It helps people socialise. It is a great way for the kids to make new friends. Additionally, it can be a good way of family bonding. Moreover, it is a great way to stay physically fit for a person like me, who hates going to the gym.
If the entertainment centre closes it will cause alot of disruption within the local community. There are no other ways to keep the children enagaged in good activities.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Regards,
Novaira

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requested points and make your purpose clear by asking the council to reconsider its decision. The examples of playing tennis and basketball, and children using the pool or indoor games, give relevant detail about how your group uses the centre. You also explain its value for socialising, family bonding and fitness. The possible effects of closure, however, are less fully developed: you mention disruption and a lack of activities for children, but could explain further what this would mean for families or where residents might otherwise go. The response is therefore relevant and complete in outline, while some ideas remain general rather than fully supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall sequence: you state your request, describe how people use the centre, explain its community value, and then discuss closure. Paragraphing helps distinguish these points, and linking expressions such as “Additionally” and “Moreover” make relationships between ideas clear. Some connections are less smooth, however. The shift from the centre’s benefits to the consequences of closure is abrupt, and the final paragraph develops only one consequence. The phrase “that includes my family, friends and myself” also makes the opening detail feel slightly awkwardly attached to the preceding sentence. A more explicit transition and fuller progression within the final paragraph would make the organisation more consistently controlled.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main ideas, with relevant terms such as “socialise,” “physically fit,” “family bonding” and “local community.” However, the range is limited by repeated general words and phrases, including “great way” and “entertainment centre,” and some choices are imprecise for this context: a sports and leisure centre is not usually called an “entertainment centre.” There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “shuting,” “enagage,” “particualry” and “commuity,” which reduce the accuracy of the vocabulary. More precise terms for the centre’s facilities and its role in the community, alongside careful proofreading, would strengthen this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple sentences and more developed structures, including the clause “since there is nothing else near by for entertainment purposes” and the contrast introduced by “while.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems persist. For example, “I am writing to request you to reconsider” needs a different verb pattern, and “the centre is particualry good” begins a sentence with a lowercase letter. The sentence beginning “Alot of people visit the centre very frequently, that includes…” joins two independent ideas incorrectly. There is also a shift from “These types of sport centres” to singular “It helps,” which weakens agreement. Review sentence boundaries and verb patterns to improve control.
