Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter for requesting you to not permanently close the community center, located in the Crossby street. What concerned me most was the decision to abolish the community complex building in coming winters .

My brother and I, we both have memebership of the gym and aerobic classes which are currently provided by the center. My father visit here in the evening with his friends to attend the leisure activities sessions for retired adults.

Many children from my society are attending swimming sessions everyday as they really enjoy it. The summer camps are quite popular among people which provide two or three days camping in group for everyone at a affordable price. If this center will be closed then there would be no public place left nearby our society. Also, due to this parents will need to send their children to private sports centers which could be quite expensive for them. So, I would highly appreciate if you could change your mind regarding this matter.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Simran Kashyap.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points and maintain a clear, polite request for the council to keep the centre open. The examples of your gym and aerobics membership, your father’s activities, children’s swimming lessons and the summer camps make your personal use of the facility clear. You also explain its community value and identify a likely consequence of closure: families may have to pay for private sports centres. To make the case more fully developed, explain more explicitly how the centre benefits different groups or supports community wellbeing, and add further effects of closure, such as reduced opportunities for exercise or social contact. The letter is relevant and purposeful, though some consequences and supporting ideas could be extended.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a recognisable structure: it opens with the purpose, gives examples of use, explains community benefits and consequences, and closes appropriately. The progression from your family’s activities to wider community use is generally clear. Linking phrases such as “Also” and “So” help connect the points, but the relationships between some ideas are a little mechanical; for example, the move from summer camps to the lack of a nearby public place could be made more explicit. The long middle paragraph also combines several distinct points. Separate the community benefits from the effects of closure, and use more precise links and references so the reader can follow each stage of your argument smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal letter, including relevant terms such as “membership,” “aerobic classes,” “leisure activities” and “private sports centers.” These choices make the topic clear, and the tone is mostly appropriate. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or less natural, such as “abolish the community complex building,” “attend the leisure activities sessions” and “in coming winters.” There are also spelling errors, including “memebership,” which reduce the overall accuracy. Aim for more natural phrases and check spelling carefully; for example, refer to closing the centre rather than abolishing a building, and describe the timing directly as “in the coming winter.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional sentence beginning “If this center will be closed” and a reason clause with “as.” The message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “My brother and I, we both have” repeats the subject, while “My father visit” needs subject–verb agreement. The conditional “If this center will be closed” should use a present form in the if-clause, and “at a affordable price” has an article error. Review agreement, articles and conditional structures, and avoid unnecessary subject repetition. More consistent control of these patterns would make the letter smoother while preserving the range of sentence types you already attempt.
