Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear sir,

I am writting this to letter to bring your attention towards our Millwood community sports centre. This sports centre has been around in our community since I was is high school. Now a days this centre has been attraction of various sport and leisure activities.

For me and my friends we usually go there to play basketball and to vent out our energy and worries from everyday life. However in adddition, our older peers go there to stay active and to spend time with their friends.

In todays hectic life, this sport centre is much needed for all age groups. But as with news of closing it down. I am really worried on behalf of everyone.I will really appreciate if you can take this matter in higher authorities and help us keep this centre in our community.

Yours faithful,

Simran

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the centre and explain that you and your friends use it for basketball and to relieve everyday stress; you also mention older community members using it to stay active and socialise. These details address part of the first bullet, and your concern about closure is clear. However, the response only partially fulfils the task: it does not explain in enough detail why the centre matters to the wider community, and the possible effects of closure on local people are not described. The request to refer the matter to higher authorities is relevant, but the letter needs more developed reasons and consequences. It is also 9 words below the required minimum, which limits the space available to address all three points.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The letter has a recognisable structure, moving from the centre’s history and your use of it to its importance and a closing request. Paragraph breaks help separate these points, and expressions such as “However” and “In addition” attempt to connect ideas. Overall, though, progression is uneven: the community’s importance and the effects of closure are introduced but not developed, so the final appeal arrives abruptly. Some linking is also awkward, as in “However in addition,” where the two transitions conflict, and “But as with news of closing it down” does not form a clear connection. Organise the body around the three requested points and use simpler, more precise links between them.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “sports and leisure activities,” “stay active,” and “community,” and the reader can understand your main concern. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “bring your attention towards,” “has been attraction,” and “take this matter in higher authorities.” Spelling errors, including “writting” and “adddition,” also reduce accuracy. Aim for clear, natural formal expressions rather than trying to make phrases sound elaborate. For example, you could say “draw your attention to the centre,” “has become a popular venue,” and “raise this matter with the relevant authorities.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response uses mostly simple sentence patterns, with a few attempts to add detail through clauses and connectors. Meaning is generally recoverable, but frequent errors in sentence construction and verb forms make the writing less controlled. Examples include “I am writting this to letter,” “since I was is high school,” and the fragment “But as with news of closing it down.” There are also problems with articles, agreement, and punctuation, as in “this sports centre has been attraction” and “everyone.I.” To improve, build complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, check tense consistency, and proofread punctuation. For instance: “The centre has been part of our community since I was in high school.”
