Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I have just recently been apprised of the fact that community centre is scheduled to close in the next month. I have been an active member of centre for last five years and would feel deprived of if the decision to close is not revoked.
I and my friends have been using the centre for our weekly soccer plays, and for the daily afternoon get together. We all friends work in the nearby area, so after finishing work, we find this centre a place to chill-out. My wife have been using this for her daily exercise at the community gym. She is an avid athlete and find this centre near to our home.
Additionally, our community is at a 10 Km of distance from the main city centre. Due to this, this centre has been a must to go for all age groups for their daily excercise or short get together. so, this centre holds a significant importance in the physical and mental well-being of the society.
As I mentioned that the city is far from our community, so I am afraid that many individuals would not be able to carry on their daily excercise routines as they would have to travel a alot for this. This would impact the overall general well-being of the society, and exposure to obesity, depression and sedentary lifestyle related diseases would become common.
I am hopefull that the decision to close this centre will be revisited on the grounds that this is being used by community for diverse range of reasons.
Your sincerely,
Muhammad Waqass

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three points and maintains a clear, persuasive purpose: you describe weekly football, socialising after work, and your wife’s gym use, then explain the centre’s value to a community distant from the city. You also identify plausible consequences of closure, including disrupted exercise and poorer physical and mental health. These details make the case relevant and supported. Some claims, however, are broad rather than fully developed—for example, that obesity and depression “would become common” is a strong prediction without explanation or evidence. The community’s needs are clear, but adding a specific example of who would be most affected, such as older residents or young people, would make the impact more convincing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear progression from your personal use of the centre, to its wider community value, to the consequences of closure and a final request. Paragraphing supports this structure, and links such as “Additionally” and “As I mentioned” help connect the points. This is coherent overall, with some features of stronger, more flexible organisation. However, “As I mentioned” repeats the distance point rather than advancing the argument, and the repeated use of “this centre” makes some references feel mechanical. The opening and closing are appropriate, though the final request could be more direct. Use a wider range of clear references and transitions to make the progression smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for the topic, including “active member,” “physical and mental well-being,” “sedentary lifestyle,” and “revisited.” These choices help communicate both personal experience and community impact, and the meaning is generally clear. There are also several inaccurate or unnatural expressions that limit precision: “weekly soccer plays,” “daily afternoon get together,” “a must to go,” and “exposure to obesity” do not sound natural in this context. Spelling errors such as “excercise” and “hopefull” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, describe playing football, meeting socially, and the risk of obesity rather than exposure to it.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response attempts both simple and more complex sentences, including a conditional structure in “if the decision to close is not revoked” and a reason clause beginning “Due to this.” The overall meaning remains understandable, but errors in agreement, articles, and sentence construction occur across the letter. Examples include “My wife have been using” and “She … find,” where the verb should agree with the singular subject, and “I am hopefull,” which needs a different verb construction. Articles are also missing in phrases such as “member of centre” and “used by community.” Some long sentences, particularly the one beginning “As I mentioned,” would be clearer if divided or restructured. Review subject–verb agreement and article use, then proofread each sentence.
