Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am formally writing to describe the importance of the sports and leisure centre for the community members as it is the only place for physical activity and entertainment in the whole society.

Being a resident of this society, I frequently use the sports centre for outdoor activites particularly on weekends. I prefer to play badminton with my close friends and siblings, in fact we usually play teamup matches with the seniors which really help us to improve our skills. Additionally, the leisure centre bring people from different cultural backgrounds facilitates to enhance friend's circle.

Besides that, the sports centre provides many opportunities for youngsters such as organizing sports competitions which enable teenagers to participate and showcase their talents. Recently, the weekly course for gymnastics was a show stopper as it helped children especially girls to defend themselves in case of kidnapping.

The closure of this centre would have negative effects on the people as it will reduce their leisure time activities consequently, promoting sedentary lifestyle. Instead of, closing the center permenantly, I would request you to allocate funds or membership charges for maintainence which would be beneficial for the residents and society.

I hope you will consider my suggestion.

Yours sincerely,

Albert Alice

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three requested points and maintains a clear, appropriately formal purpose. You explain how you use the centre through weekend badminton with friends and siblings, and describe its community role through competitions and gymnastics classes. You also identify likely consequences of closure, including reduced leisure activity and a more sedentary lifestyle, then make a practical request to consider funding or membership charges. These ideas are relevant and supported with examples, although some claims are broad or not fully explained—for instance, calling it the only place for activity and entertainment, and saying gymnastics helps children defend themselves in a kidnapping. Clarifying the centre’s wider benefits and explaining the likely effects on different groups would make the support more consistently convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a clear progression: your personal use of the centre, its wider community value, the consequences of closure, and a proposed alternative. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, while transitions such as “Additionally,” “Besides that,” and “The closure of this centre” guide the reader through the argument. The letter also uses an appropriate opening and closing. Some links are less smooth: “Additionally” introduces a point about social connections, while “Besides that” then shifts to youth opportunities without explicitly showing how these examples relate to the central argument. The phrase “Instead of, closing” also interrupts the flow. More precise transitions and clearer links between examples and their significance would make the progression feel more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the letter, including topic-specific terms such as “sports competitions,” “cultural backgrounds,” “sedentary lifestyle,” and “allocate funds.” These choices help communicate the centre’s recreational and social value. There are, however, some inaccurate or unnatural word choices and collocations, including “teamup matches,” “show stopper,” and “maintainence.” “The leisure centre bring people” also reflects an incorrect word form, while “whole society” is not a natural way to describe the local area. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Aim for familiar, accurate collocations—for example, “team matches,” “a major attraction,” and “the local community”—rather than using expressions whose meaning or form is uncertain.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response includes a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, such as the sentence beginning “Being a resident…” and the clause explaining that competitions “enable teenagers to participate and showcase their talents.” Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “the leisure centre bring people” needs subject–verb agreement (“brings”), and “for maintainence” requires a different grammatical construction, such as “to cover maintenance costs.” The sentence beginning “Instead of, closing” has faulty punctuation and structure; write “Instead of closing the centre permanently, I would request…” Also, “which really help us” should agree with the plural subject (“helps” if referring to playing, or “help” if referring to matches). More consistent control of agreement and sentence construction would improve accuracy.
