Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter as a disappointment after hearing the news of closing the sports and leisure centre in the Rundle town.
This local leisure centre has been a regular visiting place for my family and friends, as we often go there to have a quality time with each other especially on weekends. We use the centre as a good pastime place by doing recreational activities and playing sports.
The facilities the leisure centre provide with are an availability of open area, park, picnic areas, some indoor games and swimming pool, this leisure centre is everyone's favourite place to visit atleast once a week. Not only chidren, but also adults and elders go there to enjoy and spend time with their peers. This place brings a sense of belonging and an urge to stay fit at the same time.
However, I do not agree with the idea of closing this leisure centre soon. The closure of local leisure centre can result into lonliness and unhealthy lifestyle among people, becuase they would not have any place to go. As you know this leisure centre is the only place where local people go, whereas rest of places are far away from the town.
This step can be proven detrimental for the reputation of local council as no one will appreciate this.
I would appreciate, if you re-consider the closour of local centre.
Yours faithfully,
Simrat

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requested points and make your position clear: you oppose closure and ask the council to reconsider. The details about family and friends visiting at weekends, using the centre for sports and recreation, and the range of facilities make the letter relevant. You also explain community value through fitness and belonging, and identify possible loneliness and an unhealthy lifestyle if it closes. These points meet the task well, but some are less fully developed than others. For example, the effects on local people are stated generally; a specific consequence, such as reduced access to exercise for children or older residents, would strengthen the explanation. The comment about damage to the council’s reputation is also asserted rather than supported. A more developed case would make the request more persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall structure: an opening purpose, paragraphs about use and community value, a paragraph explaining the consequences of closure, and a closing request. The progression is generally easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “However” and “Not only … but also” help connect ideas. Some connections are less smooth, however. The facilities sentence combines several items and then shifts abruptly to the centre’s popularity, while “This step” in the final body paragraph has a somewhat unclear reference. The ideas about community importance and the effects of closure could also be separated more distinctly. Use shorter sentences for lists and make references explicit—for example, “Closing the centre could…”—to make cohesion more natural and precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of vocabulary for the topic, including “recreational activities,” “sense of belonging,” “stay fit,” and “detrimental.” These choices help communicate the centre’s value and the possible consequences of closure. However, several noticeable word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems make some phrases sound unnatural, such as “a disappointment after hearing the news,” “quality time with each other,” and “result into lonliness.” There are also misspellings, including “chidren,” “becuase,” and “closour.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding the main message, but they reduce precision and polish. Prefer familiar, accurate combinations and proofread carefully; for instance, “I was disappointed to hear” is more natural than “a disappointment after hearing.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “Not only children, but also adults and elders…” and the reason clause beginning “because.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur and occasionally make sentences awkward. For example, “The facilities the leisure centre provide with are an availability…” has problems with the verb form and sentence construction, while “I would appreciate, if you re-consider…” uses an unnecessary comma and an incomplete pattern for a polite request. There are also issues with articles and number, as in “closing of local leisure centre.” Work on subject–verb agreement, article use, and complete sentence patterns. Reading each sentence aloud and checking its main verb can help improve accuracy while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
