IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Write a letter to the local council. In your letter

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 5.5)

My name is Japreet Kaur and I am a member of the local council. I am writing this letter on behalf of our local community to request you to please reconsider your decision of closing the local council in our town.

Me and my family and all my friends use this council centre on regular basis. It is basically a place where we all can meet after our hectic work days and spend some good quality time together. This centre is located in the middle of your town and is very convenient to access. All the facilities of sports and leisure centre are extremely good.

This centre is very important for the locality as people of the community can spend some time on sports as there are weekly sports activities as well which is very good for the health of the youth. Also the fitness and leisure centre helps the old people in the community to take care of their health and fitness.

If the centre will close, then the it will be very hard for the local people to concentrate on their fitness level on the daily basis as the other fitness centre is about 20-30 km far from the town.

I request again to please take a look into this matter and please reconsider your decision again.

Thank you for your time.

Your's Sincerely,

Jaspreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address the three requested points and make your purpose clear: you ask the council to reconsider closing the centre. The examples of meeting after work, weekly sports activities, and older residents maintaining their health are relevant. You also explain that another fitness centre is 20–30 km away, which gives a practical consequence of closure. However, the effects are developed mainly in terms of access to exercise; you could explain further how closure might affect social contact, young people’s activities, or community wellbeing. The opening also says you are a council member, which conflicts with writing on behalf of local residents and may confuse your role. Clarifying who you represent and extending the consequences would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it opens with the request, then explains how the centre is used, why it matters, and what closure could mean, before ending with a renewed appeal. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these points. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however. For example, “Me and my family and all my friends” is an awkward start to the second paragraph, and “If the centre will close, then the it…” interrupts the flow. The repeated requests to reconsider also make the ending somewhat repetitive. Use clearer references and transitions, and make each paragraph develop one distinct point, especially the consequences of closure.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough relevant vocabulary to communicate the topic, including “weekly sports activities,” “fitness,” “local community,” and “convenient to access.” There are also attempts at more descriptive phrasing, such as “hectic work days” and “quality time.” However, some expressions are imprecise or unnatural, including “closing the local council” when you mean closing the centre, “on regular basis,” and “take a look into this matter.” Repetition of “centre,” “community,” and “please reconsider” also limits flexibility. Choose more precise collocations and vary the wording where possible; this will make the letter sound more natural and persuasive without changing its clear meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more developed sentences, including the explanation beginning “as people of the community can spend some time on sports.” The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation slips are noticeable. Examples include “Me and my family,” “on regular basis,” and “If the centre will close,” where pronoun form, article use, and conditional verb form need attention. “Then the it” contains an unnecessary repeated word, and there is no space after the full stop in “together.This.” The closing “Your's Sincerely” also has an apostrophe error. Review sentence patterns, articles, and punctuation, then proofread carefully to improve accuracy.
