Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. I wish to bring to your attention that city centre is the heart of Aberdeen city, its closure will have a huge impact on all the citizens living in Aberdeen.

I go to centre everyday for my yoga class, my best friend works in a retail store of centre and she will be going to loose her job if the centre closes. Our families go to centre all the time whenever we want to celebrate anything special.

Sports club, Gymkhana, yoga centre followed by kids play area and amazing restuarants, everything is located at centre. Activities that are offered by these places are very importand for our physical and mental wellbeing. Some people cannot imaging to start their day without going to gym early morning.

It would make a great effect in our quality of life, as accessing these facilities will become a really hard task for everyone. And eventually, everyone will start thinking to move from the area which did not provide its people the basic facilities.

I would appreciate your prompt attention to this matter

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points and make your concern clear: you describe attending yoga, your friend’s job, and family celebrations, then explain the centre’s health and social value and the consequences of closure. These relevant details meet the task well. The explanation of community importance is strongest where you mention physical and mental wellbeing, while the effects on residents are less fully developed: difficulty accessing facilities and people considering moving are stated, but not supported with specific examples. The letter would be more complete with a direct request that the council keep the centre open and a more formal closing. Your ideas are clear overall, though some need further extension to make the case more persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a generally coherent sequence: you introduce the concern, give personal examples, explain the centre’s wider value, and describe possible consequences. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these stages. However, some links between ideas are abrupt, and the final paragraph moves quickly from access difficulties to residents moving away. The phrase “Sports club, Gymkhana, yoga centre followed by kids play area and amazing restuarants” reads as a list rather than a fully connected explanation. Use clearer transitions to show how these facilities benefit different groups, and make the final consequence follow more explicitly from the loss of the centre. A conventional closing would also give the letter a more complete structure.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary for the topic, including “physical and mental wellbeing,” “facilities,” “closure,” and “quality of life.” These choices help communicate the main argument. However, several word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems reduce precision: “make a great effect” is not a natural expression, “loose her job” confuses two words, and “importand,” “restuarants,” and “imaging” are misspelled. “City centre” is also unclear because the task concerns a sports and leisure centre, not necessarily the city centre. Aim for accurate, natural combinations and check spelling carefully; this would make your vocabulary more controlled and persuasive.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, such as the sentence beginning “I wish to bring to your attention” and the clause explaining what may happen if the centre closes. Most of your meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “I go to centre everyday” needs an article before “centre,” and “its closure will have” joins two complete ideas with only a comma. In “everyone will start thinking to move,” the verb pattern after “thinking” is not formed correctly. Review articles, sentence boundaries, and verb patterns, while retaining your attempts at longer sentences. More consistent control of these structures would make the letter smoother.
