Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to bring your attention to the importance of sports and leisure centre for the community residents and what would be the excepted consequences of its closure.
Sports centre is, in fact, a place where I use to go to regularly with my friends, as it provides a peaceful environment for playing. I enjoy cricket, badminton, and football there with my friends and family. In addition, the food area and other refreshment spots in the centre are valuable for entertainment purpose.
Undoubtedly, the sports and leisure centre contibutes to the physical and mental wellbeing of local people. Moreover, it provides a platform for people to gather and share quality time with each other. Through this centre young people can learn various moral values such as communication and leadership skills, team work, perseverence, patience and motivation to achieve their goals, which ultimately enhances the prosperity of community.
If the centre will close then people can neither play sports nor can enjoy with their family or friends. In addition, the enthusiasm of young players would come to an end, imposing a negative impact on wellbeing of society. Therefore, kindly consider these serious consequences of the centre closure.
I would appreciate a positive response to all this matter.
Yours faithfully,
Rubab Asim

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three bullet points and maintain a clear, appropriately formal purpose: you explain how you use the centre, describe its community benefits, and warn about the effects of closure. The examples of cricket, badminton and football make your personal use clear, while the discussion of young people’s teamwork and leadership extends the community argument. The consequences are relevant, particularly the loss of opportunities to play and spend time together, though this part is less developed than the benefits: you could explain practical effects, such as reduced access to affordable exercise or fewer social activities. Overall, the response fulfils the task with relevant, supported ideas, although some claims about community prosperity remain broad.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression from your personal use of the centre, to its wider value, and then to the consequences of closure. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “In addition,” “Moreover,” and “Therefore” help readers follow the argument. The opening and closing also make the purpose and request clear. Some connections are a little mechanical, however, and the final paragraph moves quickly from the closure scenario to a general conclusion. Develop that paragraph with one or two specific effects and link them explicitly to the community benefits already described. Also check spacing after sentence boundaries, as in “society. Therefore,” to keep the presentation smooth.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task and includes some useful topic-specific language, such as “physical and mental wellbeing,” “leadership skills,” and “quality time.” These choices help explain the centre’s value. You also attempt more formal expressions, including “bring your attention” and “imposing a negative impact,” but some combinations are not natural or precise. For example, “the excepted consequences” appears to mean “expected consequences,” and “entertainment purpose” would be more naturally expressed as “recreational purposes.” There are also spelling errors in “contibutes” and “perseverence.” Greater accuracy in collocation, word forms and spelling would make your ideas sound more fluent and controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the relative clause “which ultimately enhances the prosperity of community” and the conditional sentence beginning “If the centre will close.” Most of the message remains understandable, and the longer sentence listing values shows an attempt to extend ideas. Some grammatical errors persist, however. In the conditional, use “If the centre closes” or “If the centre were to close,” rather than “If the centre will close.” Other examples include “I use to go” instead of “I used to go,” missing articles in “the sports and leisure centre” and “the community,” and the awkward construction “people can neither play sports nor can enjoy.” Work on verb forms, articles and parallel sentence structures to improve accuracy.
