Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Medam,

I am writing to express my concern about the clousre of sports and leisure centre in my community. I believe that this centre plays a vital role in community and I would give reason to not close it.

My friends and my family members go on every weekend and I also spend my free time at the centre. We use the gym, swimming pool and indoor sports activity to enjoy quality time together.

I believe that the sports and leisure centre is very important for the local community because all the people of my area spend their time together. Children can also do some group activites and elderly people spend quality time as well. Also, this centre is very affordable and convient for my community.

If the centre closes, local residents have to travel a long distance to find an alternative option for this centre. Furthermore, many individuals will stop doing the exerscise and it will affect thier health and body. Lastly, it will also impact on their mental health as well.

I hope you will think about these again.

Yours Faithfully,

Jency Patel.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points and maintain a clear position: you oppose closure and ask the council to reconsider. The examples of using the gym, pool and indoor activities with family and friends answer how you use the centre, while affordability and benefits for children and older residents explain its community value. You also identify plausible consequences, including longer journeys and harm to physical and mental health. Some points are less fully developed than others: for example, you mention group activities but do not explain what they offer local children, and the effects of closure are stated generally rather than illustrated. A little more specific support would make the case more convincing and complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it opens with your concern, then covers personal use, community importance and possible consequences before closing with a request. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and linking expressions such as “Furthermore” and “Lastly” make the sequence of effects clear. Some connections are mechanical or imprecise, however. “Also” and “as well” repeat the same additive function, and “I hope you will think about these again” does not clearly refer back to the council’s proposal. The opening sentence also moves from your concern to “I would give reason” rather abruptly. Use more precise references and vary how you connect related points to make the progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic vocabulary to communicate the main points, including “sports and leisure centre,” “swimming pool,” “affordable,” and “mental health.” There are also attempts to express importance and consequences with phrases such as “plays a vital role” and “alternative option.” However, spelling errors are noticeable, including “Medam,” “clousre,” “activites,” “exerscise,” and “thier,” and some word combinations are unnatural, such as “go on every weekend” and “indoor sports activity.” These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, but they limit precision and naturalness. Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations for describing attendance, facilities and the effects of closure.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple statements and some longer structures, including the conditional sentence “If the centre closes, local residents have to travel a long distance” and a clause explaining why the centre matters. The message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. In “I would give reason to not close it,” the structure is incomplete or unnatural; “I would like to give reasons why it should remain open” would be clearer. Articles and prepositions also need attention in “plays a vital role in community” and “go on every weekend.” The final sentence, “I hope you will think about these again,” has an unclear reference. Aim to control these sentence patterns and check articles, verb forms and punctuation while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
