Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Sir/Mam

I hope this email finds you well. My name is Ramit Kumar from Dorval community. I live in Dorval Street which is very close to city center. Me, my friend and my family usually visit there for multiple purpose. For example like to play tennis, to use the swimming pool and many more indoor activities. I wanted to focus on sports and leisure centre which plays an important role in everyone's life in our local community. People love to go their and play their favorite game. It helps them to practice their as a professional players and leisure activity area helps them to spend their free time by walking or sitting there. I am worried about all those people if the centre close it will impact on their life badly so i wanted to request you to please help our community by not closing the centre. I will be very greatful.

Best Regards

Ramit Kumar

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address the main purpose by describing how you and others use the centre, explaining its community value, and asking the council not to close it. The examples of tennis, swimming and indoor activities are relevant, and you mention both exercise and leisure. However, the effects of closure are only stated generally: “it will impact on their life badly” does not explain what local people might lose, such as affordable exercise, social contact or activities for young people. The centre’s importance is also asserted rather than supported with specific community examples. Develop these consequences and explain more clearly how different groups benefit to make the response more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The letter follows a broadly understandable order: you introduce yourself, describe visits, explain the centre’s value and make a request. However, most ideas are placed in one long paragraph, so the reader has to work to distinguish the different points in the task. Connections between sentences are also limited or awkward; for example, “I wanted to focus on sports and leisure centre” does not clearly link your examples to the explanation that follows. Use separate paragraphs for your use of the centre, its community importance and the effects of closure. Clear transitions such as “In addition” and “If it closes” would help the progression feel more deliberate.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough relevant vocabulary to communicate the topic, including “swimming pool,” “indoor activities,” “professional players” and “community.” However, the range is limited and some phrases are imprecise or unnatural, which makes parts of the letter less clear. For instance, “for multiple purpose” and “practice their as a professional players” do not express your meaning accurately, while “impact on their life badly” is vague. Spelling and word-form errors such as “greatful” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise phrases about the centre’s benefits and the consequences of closure, and check spelling and collocations before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response relies mainly on simple sentence patterns, with attempts to join several ideas that are not consistently controlled. For example, “I am worried about all those people if the centre close it will impact on their life badly” combines a conditional idea and a result without a clear grammatical structure. There are also errors in agreement and articles, as in “the centre close” and “sports and leisure centre,” and the opening “Me, my friend and my family usually visit” uses an incorrect subject form. These errors sometimes make the reader pause, although the overall message remains understandable. Practise accurate conditional sentences and vary sentence structures while keeping each sentence clear.
