Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope this letter finds you well. The purpose of this letter is to express my dissatisfaction regarding your idea of closing the sports and laisure centre.
I am a local resident who has been using this activity centre since my childhood. My friends and I play football every evening in this centre and my parents also participate in some sports activities once a week to keep themselves in a good health. This centre plays a vital role in our lives for maintaning a healthy lifestyle.
As my friends and family, there are several other young people and senior citizens who visit this place frequently. This not only offer several opportunities for children to engage in different activities even provide space for older people to socialize and to enjoy walks in the mornings and the evenings.
If the centre will be closed then the people from our town have to travel to father locations to participate in physical activities and follow their interest in these categories. Moreover, it will create difficulties for elderly people to travel to neighbouring towns and continue their routine.
I believe you will revise your decision for shutting down leisure activity centre.
Yours faithfully,
Suman

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three requested points and maintain a clear, appropriate position: you oppose closure and ask the council to reconsider. The examples of playing football with friends and your parents taking part in weekly activities make your personal use specific, while the benefits for children and older residents explain the centre’s wider value. You also identify likely consequences, especially longer journeys and disruption to elderly people’s routines. To make the case more fully developed, explain these effects in greater detail—for example, how closure could reduce access to affordable exercise or social contact—and make your final request more direct and persuasive. Overall, the response is relevant and supported, though some points remain general.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear progression: it introduces your objection, describes how your family uses the centre, broadens the discussion to the community, and then considers the consequences of closure. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” help connect related points. The overall arrangement is coherent, but some connections are less smooth. For instance, “As my friends and family” is an unclear transition into the wider community, and “This not only offer… even provide…” makes the relationship between the benefits difficult to follow. Use clearer references and parallel linking, such as “Like my family, many other residents…” followed by two coordinated benefits. The closing request could also connect more explicitly to the reasons already presented.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of vocabulary for a formal letter, including “local resident,” “vital role,” “senior citizens,” and “neighbouring towns.” These choices communicate the main ideas, but several spelling, word-choice, and collocation problems reduce precision. Examples include “laisure,” “maintaning,” “father locations,” and “in a good health”; “activity centre” and “leisure activity centre” are also used inconsistently. Some phrases, such as “participate in these categories,” sound unnatural or vague. Aim for accurate, natural combinations and check spelling carefully. More precise wording for the centre’s benefits and the consequences of closure would make the argument clearer and more convincing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including the relative clause in “who has been using this activity centre since my childhood” and the conditional idea about what would happen if the centre closed. The message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “This not only offer” needs subject–verb agreement, and “If the centre will be closed then the people… have to travel” uses an unsuitable verb form for a hypothetical consequence. “My parents also participate… to keep themselves in a good health” contains an article error. Practise conditional structures such as “If the centre closes, residents will have to travel…” and check agreement and articles. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen control.
