Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I'm writing this letter with deep concern about the proposed closure of Delta Salt Sports and Leisure centre .

My family and I uses that facility for weekly handout and its now being part of your weekly routine . My Siblings uses the centre swimming pool for swimming lessons , my aged parents do come weekly to play board games with their friends . My friends and I used the centre's basketball court to practise playing basketball.

This centre is very assessible and affordable to various age bracket of the society. It is provides leisure and fitness activities to various members of the public. Senior members of the public do socialise with other members while using the facility

If this centre were to close up it would affect the health of the aging population greatly, as we all know bonding helps our senior citizens fight many old diseases, also there would be no affordable place for school children to do sports thereby puting financial strain to their parents.

I hope my letter is postively responded to and I look forward to hearing back from you .

Yours Faithfully,

Aragba Rebekah

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points and maintain a clear, appropriate purpose: you explain how your family and friends use the centre, why it serves different age groups, and what closure could mean for residents. Specific examples—swimming lessons, board games and basketball practice—make the letter relevant. The community benefits and likely effects are also identified, particularly social contact for older people and the loss of an affordable place for children to play sports. However, these latter points are less fully explained than the personal examples; for instance, you could clarify how closure would affect older residents’ wellbeing or what alternatives families could afford. The request to the council is implied rather than stated directly, so a clear appeal to keep the centre open would strengthen the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a sensible overall progression: it introduces your concern, describes personal use, explains community value, and then considers the consequences of closure. Separate paragraphs help the reader follow these stages, and the closing is appropriate for a formal letter. Some links between ideas are less smooth, however. The sentence about senior residents socialising follows the general point about activities without clearly showing how it supports the centre’s importance. The final paragraph combines effects on older people and schoolchildren in one long sentence, making the relationship between the points harder to follow. Use clearer transitions such as “In addition” and “If the centre closes,” and separate distinct consequences into shorter sentences. This would make the progression more consistently clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “proposed closure,” “swimming lessons,” “basketball court,” “affordable,” and “financial strain.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and there is some attempt to use more formal language suited to a council letter. However, several inaccurate or unnatural expressions reduce precision: “weekly handout” does not convey the intended activity, “very assessible” appears to mean “accessible,” and “close up” is not the natural phrase for a facility shutting. Spelling and word-form slips such as “positively” and “putting” also affect the overall impression. Aim for accurate, natural collocations and check spelling carefully; a more precise range would help you express the community benefits and consequences with greater flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including the conditional “If this centre were to close…” and a sentence explaining the effects on older people. The main message remains understandable, but errors in agreement and sentence construction are noticeable. For example, “My family and I uses” should be “use,” and “My Siblings uses” should be “My siblings use.” “It is provides” combines two verb forms incorrectly; use “It provides.” The final conditional sentence also shifts into an unclear construction with “thereby puting financial strain,” which needs a complete, correctly formed clause. Punctuation and spacing around commas and full stops need attention as well. Practise checking subject–verb agreement and building longer sentences from clear clauses.
