Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear sir,
I am writing this letter to express the importance role of the sports and leisure centre in our everyday lives.
I often visit this centre during weekends to perfom light excercise. It helps me to stay fit and healthy. Sometimes, I play cricket with my freinds. My parents go there for a walk everyday.
This sports and leisure centre is beneficial for people from every age group. The children play sports and participate in music and dance events. The older people go there to relax and socialize with others. This sports and leisure centre brings people from different cultures and backgrounds together. Therefore, it plays a keen role in our society.
If this sports and leisure centre closes, people will have nowhere to go during their free time. As a result, they might experience stress and anxiety. It might also reduce the development of children and could also effect the physical well-being of people, therefore it should not be closed. I hope you will take appropriate decision for the overall welfare of our society.
Regards,
Iqbal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three requirements and maintains a clear position in favour of keeping the centre open. You give specific examples of use, including exercising and playing cricket at weekends and your parents walking there, then explain its value for children, older people, and residents from different backgrounds. You also identify plausible consequences of closure, such as fewer places for recreation and possible effects on wellbeing. These ideas are relevant and supported, although some points remain general: for example, the effects on children’s development and people’s stress are asserted rather than explained with a concrete example. To strengthen the response further, develop one or two consequences in more detail and make the request to the council more explicit.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information follows a clear, logical sequence: you introduce your purpose, describe how people use the centre, explain its community value, and then discuss closure. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking expressions such as “Sometimes,” “Therefore,” and “As a result” help connect ideas. The overall organisation is easy to follow. Some connections are a little mechanical, however, and the final paragraph joins several consequences and the recommendation in one long sentence, using “therefore” again. You could improve the flow by separating the effects from your final appeal and varying the links between ideas. A more formal closing would also make the letter’s structure feel more complete.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “socialize,” “different cultures and backgrounds,” “stress and anxiety,” and “physical well-being.” These choices communicate the main ideas clearly, and the tone is generally appropriate for a letter to the council. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or less natural, such as “importance role,” “perform light exercise,” and “plays a keen role.” There are also spelling errors, including “excercise,” “freinds,” and “everyday” where “every day” is intended. These do not prevent understanding, but more accurate phrasing and careful proofreading would make the letter more precise and polished.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter includes both simple sentences and some more complex forms, such as “If this sports and leisure centre closes, people will have nowhere to go” and the sentence beginning “As a result.” Most meanings remain clear, and you use present and future forms appropriately in several places. Some grammatical errors persist, including the article and noun phrase in “the importance role,” the construction “go there for a walk everyday,” and the awkwardly joined final sentence, where punctuation and clause structure need attention. The sentence about closure effects also combines several ideas without clear separation. Review articles and sentence boundaries, and use full stops or conjunctions to control longer sentences more accurately.
