Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to explain about how centre plays an important role for community.

To begin with, I have been using centre from last few years for playing games with my friends and as a picnic spot to spend time with my family considerably. Not only we play there, but also we use the centre for community meetings as it provides good space for everyone.

Sports and leisure activities are essential for overall growth of body, mentally as well as physically. Sports and leisure centre provides an opportunity to local community to escape from their sedantary lifestyle and follow healthy lifestyle.

Without the centres, people can get more prone to obesity and stressful life, because people cannot find the suitable place where they can go and spend their time to relax and play sports with others as well as local community to organise the local meetings.

Thank you for your time.

Best regards,

Fateh Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you explain that you use the centre for games, family outings and community meetings, describe its health and social value, and outline possible consequences of closure. These details keep the letter relevant and give it a clear purpose. The community benefits are more fully explained than the personal impact: for example, the risks of obesity and stress are mentioned, but the effects on particular groups or the loss of meeting space could be developed further. The opening also says you are writing to explain the centre’s role, but does not directly ask the council to keep it open. A clear request and one or two specific examples of who would be affected would make the response more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a recognisable structure, moving from your own use of the centre to its wider value and then to the consequences of closure. Paragraphing helps distinguish these points, and transitions such as “To begin with” and “Without the centres” make the progression easy to follow. Some linking is less natural or precise, however: “Not only we play there, but also…” does not form a clear parallel structure, and the final sentence combines several effects in a long sequence. The reference to “the centres” is also unclear after discussing one local centre. To strengthen the organisation, use clearer links between each requested point and divide the final consequences into distinct, well-connected ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “community meetings,” “sedentary lifestyle,” “obesity” and “relax,” which helps communicate the centre’s health and social importance. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “overall growth” and “essential.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “explain about,” “playing games” in this context, and “a picnic spot to spend time… considerably.” The spelling of “sedentary” is also incorrect. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding your main points, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Choose familiar collocations carefully—for example, “explain the role,” “play sports,” and “spend quality time”—and check spelling before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the “Not only…but also” construction and a sentence beginning with “because.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in basic patterns. For example, “how centre plays” needs an article, “I have been using centre from last few years” has problems with articles, tense and the time expression, and “Not only we play there” has incorrect word order for this construction. The final sentence also becomes difficult to control as several clauses are joined together. Practise accurate article use and present-perfect time expressions, and break long sentences into shorter units. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control.
