Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to express my concern about the proposal of closing sports centre in my local community.
I have been visiting this centre for the last six years on regular basis with my friends and family in the evening. We spend our evenings there by participating in different sports. In this way, we get a chance to spend quality time together.
This sports centre plays an important role in local resident's lives because people can stay physically and mentally healthy while playing their favourite games. In addition, when local people visit this centre in the mornings and evening, they can meet new people, due to this, they can build a strong relationship with their neighbours.
Upon closing this centre, individuals have to face some problems. If the centre would be closed, sports people could be unable to polish their sports skills. The decision of closing this centre can result in lost interest of people in sports, so they may suffer from serious health issues later in their lives. At the same time, people also can loss an opportunity to expand their social circle if this facility is closed.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I hope the local community reconsider this proposal before making a final decision.
Yours faithfully,
Soni.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three requested points and maintains a clear, appropriate concern about the proposed closure. You explain how you and your family and friends use the centre, describe its health and social value, and outline possible consequences, including reduced sports participation and fewer opportunities to meet others. These ideas are relevant and supported with some explanation, such as the link between playing sports and staying healthy. To make the case more fully developed, add a specific example of activities or groups that rely on the centre, and explain more concretely what local people might lose if it shuts. The closing request for reconsideration gives the letter a clear purpose, though it could be phrased more directly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter is organised in a clear sequence: purpose, personal use, community benefits, possible effects of closure, and a closing request. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking expressions such as “In addition” and “At the same time” help connect related points. The ideas are generally easy to follow, although some links feel mechanical or do not express the relationship precisely. For example, “due to this” follows the point about meeting new people, but a more direct connection would make the cause-and-effect clearer. The final paragraph also moves quickly between several consequences. Use a wider range of natural transitions and make the relationship between each consequence explicit to strengthen the flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range for the topic, including relevant phrases such as “physically and mentally healthy,” “sports skills,” and “social circle.” These choices make the main message clear, and there is some attempt to use more formal language suitable for a council letter. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “proposal of closing,” “polish their sports skills,” and “lost interest of people in sports.” “Local resident’s lives” also uses an incorrect form for the plural meaning. Aim for more precise, natural combinations and check word forms; this would make the argument sound more fluent and persuasive while preserving your clear meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response includes both straightforward sentences and attempts at more complex structures, for example the conditional sentence beginning “If the centre would be closed” and the clause explaining that people can meet new neighbours. Most meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors prevent consistently strong control. In the conditional, use “If the centre were closed, people could…” rather than combining “if” with “would.” There are also errors in articles and number, as in “on regular basis,” and in verb form, as in “people also can loss.” The sentence about meeting people is awkwardly joined with “due to this.” Practise accurate conditionals, verb forms, and sentence connections while retaining your attempts at varied structures.
